Put it in Auto (Green) mode then try, if flash pops up, it is the case of settings otherwise mechanical problem.

the d40 takes a while to focus, make sure the subject is centered on any of the 3 focus brackets.next press the shutter halfway and wait until the camera beeps , when it does, press it all the way and the picture will come out crisp.

SOURCE: nikon d40 flash won't fire

My d40 did the same thing and the guy at Wolf Camera said a sensor is bad. The falsh was up but every time I focused it tried to pop up the flash again but it would not fire.

I had 2 options. Send it off for 8 weeks to Nikon at a $240 minimum or buy a flash attachment for $100. I chose the $100 option.

SOURCE: Nikon D80 - My (built in) Flash will not pop up.

That is just a mechanical problem. There is just a little hook holding the flash and it retracts when you push the bottom to pop up the flash. I'm sure it can be easily fixed, never the less your camera store or Nikon should take care of it. So take it back to the place you bought it.

Why does nikon j1 clock reset each time the camera starts up

Yes, there is a separate battery for the clock and all of your saved settings that is not user replaceable. All Nikon 1 cameras are still in warranty because the camera only recently became available. I would phone Nikon USA's Service Department at (800) 645-6687 Monday through Friday from 7:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. and they will tell you how to proceed.

Nikon d40 flash won't fire

Hi,

If it clicks when the flash is already open, it seems there would be a problem with the flash open sensor. The camera thinks the flash is closed, so it tries to open it again and it refuses to fire, because firing in the closed position would blow the bulb.

The D40 flash is a bit different, but if you open it (just unscrew the two little screws in front) you'll recognize the sensor clips. Open and close the flash and see if the make contact when open.

(And DON'T fire the flash when open, or at the very least don't touch anything in there when firing or you'll get zapped.

Goodluck..

Nikon j1 flash not working

Does the flash ready indicator also stay off, after you opened the flash and pressed the shutter release button half?
Because that could indicate there is not enough power in the battery to charge the flash.
If the light comes on, and still the flash does not fire, there would be a serious problem. My guess; that only can be solved at the service centre.
To be sure nothing else is wrong. Charge the battery first.
Then switch on the camera, open the flash, select fill in flash and press the shutter release button half. If the flash ready indicator lights, press the shutter complete and see if it works.

Succes

Built in speedlight on nikon d70 has stopped working. The light pops up, but no flash

If flash pops up and doesn't fire, little white pin/lever inside flash has lodged up inside flash casing and needs to be eased from where it is stuck. Careful when opening the flash up to dislodge the white plastic pin/lever, there are tiny wires you REALLY don't want to damage....

See how, with pics here:

D70 internal flash not firing

Check if something is preventing the flash to pop up 'fully'. Check for some dust or other particles trapped between the flash and the body. Does the screen say 'Subject is too dark'? If so, the flash has not popped up fully.

Nikon d40 flash won't fire

If lightning bolt icon is blinking in viewfinder, flash is not ready. Either flash isnt popped up all the way or flash strobe tube is bad.

Nikon D40X inbuilt flash

If it's withing 30 days, get it exchanged. I have a D70s and it's been working fine for me, maybe something with the D40x with other customers? Take it back to the store and let an "instructor" try it out to make sure it's not a setting.

It's great for the manufacturer to know about any problems so they can get a good sample of problems to help many people. Good luck.

Flash: PCB Replacement v. New Bulb!?

I had the same issue. The flash is set to go off, the camera assumes it went off, (as the record metadata shows) but it doen't go off at all, and the piture is underexposed.

I bought the 100 page repair manual, which is ONLY a dissassemble/reassemble manual with NO diagnostics. (Got it on ebay) So I was atleast able to get to the capacitor and flash bulb. I saw 300V across the capacitor leads, and the same 300Volts across the flash bulb leads. SO I am assuming that there is a transistor or relay that drops to ground to fire the flash that isn't working, or the electronic signal to drive that isn't working.

It seems most people replace the entire flash circuit board(which is near the capacitor under the left hand side). But it seems Nikon only sells parts to it certified repair facilities.

Ugh.... Looks like I'm buying a SB-600, as this is the cheepest solution. Too bad, because the on-board flash is more than decent. I hope the SB-600 thrills me enough to change my mood. :)
