Question about Philips 50P8341 50" Rear Projection Television

1 Answer

Philips 50p8341a - 1) Periodic flashing, 2) Haze over picture

I've had this Tv for 5 or so years and it's always had this haze over it. Not enough to disturb the picture but it gives it this bright, glowing effect. Kind of like when cameramen put a screen over their lense so everything has a glowing angelic feel so as to cover imperfections in the actor's faces. Hard to describe I guess. But it's always had it and it was ok but as time has gone on, I've decided to inquire about it. I know it's not HD but I'd at least like it to have the clarity of my small tvs. Not staticky or anything, it's a clean picture but i guess kind of washed out.

The second issue is that periodically when something bright or explosive happens on a program, the tv flashes. Not off and on but a split second flash of brightness kind of like a camera flash but not as pronounced. In any case, during that extremely brief flash split second all you are seeing is the flash, not the program on tv. My friends didnt really notice it until I pointed it out to them. This too has been there since day one. My wife bought it as an opened gift for Christmas from Walmart.

I have a phillips rear projection tv model no 55PP8620/79. Its showing a a red haze and poor picture quality. How do I fix this?

If the red haze is not convergence---that requires parts.

The set has three picture tubes---with set unplugged and back cover removed clean the three large lens that are topside---as for the red haze a quick way to know what is wrong is with set on turn the color to zero----what color is the screen? Should be black and white--if red to some degree tracking or screen controls may need adjusting inside the set---Yellow picture in that situation is a different issue.

Search for "coolant change projection tv", there are several good links including where to buy the coolant. I did mine yesterday and it's like having a new TV again, all for about $20 and 3 hours time.

I would first check and see if any software updates are out on this set, you can call Hitachi, if not that then it could be the engine assemble having problems.

Green dot in middile of my screen

The green dot in the center sounds like a burn mark on one or more of the picture tubes inside the set, and the curved lines are telling me that you have a problem in the convergence circuits. The blue haze around everything white tells me you either have a lot of dust build up on the lens over the CRTs, or your picture tube(s) are very weak. If this set is over about 12 years old, I would replace it. I doubt if you will be able to get the green dot out of the picture without changing the tubes which would be VERY expensive.
