Do you see any ice buildup on the back wall of the freezer or behind it?

There is no ice build up. Nothing is freezing. It feels cold inside but not cold enough to freeze. Ice cube trays get a little ice forming but not solid. Seems to have happened after the black out. Thanks

What is the model number of your unit? Is the compressor running and hot?

  • Daniel Holland Dec 10, 2012

model number is: gsl25jfph bs Not sure how to check compressor. Thanks again

  • Richard Roth
    Richard Roth Dec 10, 2012

Just pull the unit out and you can feel the compressor to see if it is hot and running. You may need to remove a cover.

    Richard Roth Dec 10, 2012

If the compressor is not running, unplug the unit and pull the relay off the compressor and give it a shake, if it rattles it is bad and will need to be replaced.http://bit.ly/XKa9S9 Below is a video to show you how to check it. Post back the results.

  • Daniel Holland Dec 10, 2012

    Compressor is warm and vibrating.

  • Richard Roth
    Richard Roth Dec 10, 2012

OK, unplug it and do the relay test.

  • Daniel Holland Dec 10, 2012

Relay does not rattle at all.

  • Richard Roth
    Richard Roth Dec 10, 2012

OK, I was afraid of that. You will need to replace the control board on the back of the unit. It is located under the small access door. Here is the part to order.http://bit.ly/TpI8Jy

  • Daniel Holland Dec 10, 2012

Would the refrigerator get cool in that case becasue the unit is cooling, just not enough to freeze. I just want to make sure. I mean I would gladly buy the part if that is what it is but i would hate to buy it and still have a problem. Is there anyway of directly checking this board? Thanks

  • Richard Roth
    Richard Roth Dec 10, 2012

No, you may be able to see burnt marks on the board though. The part is returnable so you won't need to worry there. The relay is good so the board is the only thing left to keep it from running.

  • Richard Roth
    Richard Roth Dec 10, 2012

You can test the compressor but I doubt it is bad. Take a look at this video to show you how to do the test.

  • Daniel Holland Dec 10, 2012

Great then it's worth trying. Also, it wouldn't be something like a freon charge as someone suggested to me would it?

  • Richard Roth
    Richard Roth Dec 10, 2012

No, I highly doubt it. I am 99% sure it is the board.

  • Daniel Holland Dec 10, 2012

Okay. Thank you so much. I'm gonna get the money together and try it. Thanks.

SOURCE: GE regrigerator not cooling or freezing

first defrost it by turning it off for 1\2 to 1 full day,put towels on the floor to catch the water, when a refridgerator gets frosted up it cant circulate the cold air,and if its one with the freezer on top then the cold air cant blow down into the refridgerator, check inside the refridgerator at the top where the thermostat cover is there will be a vent hole,it could have ice built up so much that its totally blocking the air flow. This usually happens when hot food is put in the refridgerator and causes steam,or the refridgerator runs too much caused by bad door seals,or the cooling fins on the back or bottom underneath plugged with dust and the freon gets too hot causing condensation inside the freezer which causes it to frost up,a plugged drain hole will back up water and freeze, the fan in the freezer may have stopped working, which is about a $60.00 part, and finally a bad defrost element (about a $40.00 part)which is a glass tube inside the freezer with a coiled up wire inside it that heats up at certain times to defrost any ice build up,(which is the last thing to check)

SOURCE: Not cooling properly

Hello,

First thing- set the controls at the mid range of their settings. Next, check the coils under the fridge to see if they are clogged with dust, etc. Next, using a couple stem thermometers, determine the temps in the freezer and fresh food sections. In the fresh food section, place a tall glass of water on a shelf in the middle, put the thermometer in and let it set for awhile in the fridge. Inside the fresh food section, look for the damper opening at the top of the wall in between the two sections. Wet the back of your fingers- can you feel air blowing through the damper opening? Inside the freezer section, look at the back wall- any frost buildup there.

Hope this help.....

The refrigerator is not freezing

Hello Teresa, this is JK. I understand that the freezer is not cooling properly. Is the compressor running? Is there air movement through the grille at the rear of the freezer? Is there warm or cold air coming from the louvers? Can you remember any odd functions prior to this issue? If you can think of anything in particular, please feel free to reconnect and maybe it's something I can help troubleshoot. Best regards,

Freezer too warm

First off, how old is the unit? Without knowing, my advice, and what has worked many times, is to unplug the unit, and turn it upside down. Thats right. Upside down. May take a couple or few people, depending on the weight. What this does, is to have the refrigerant begin running back to the top of the unit. Sometimes it settles in the bottom, and has to have extra help to start moving properly again. If, after about 6 to 24 hours it doesn't seem to have helped, it could be that you have lost the fluid, but that doesn't seem very likely. If you had, it would run consistently at the same warm temperature. If it helps, you may want to repeat the procedure to insure that it is completely free flowing. Cheap fix, if it fixes things. Good luck.

I was writing a big note here before then hit the wrong button, it was just a bunch of jargon anyway. Yes it is the condenser fan motor causing your problems. Doesn't cool the refrigerant properly than nothing works. I would change the fan before it causes any damage to the compressor.

Refrigerator doesn't get colder than 55 degrees.

Its defrost problem, the freezer should cool, then freeze, then defrost cycle should start. In your case freezer is cooling, then freezing, but its not defrosting. That's why fridge section is not cooling.-------
