Question about Locks & Locksmithing
The deadbolt portion of my door's lock system seems "stuck" inside. whether using the key on the outside, OR the knob on the inside, there is resistance. I can barely get the mechanism inside the deadbolt to turn to lift the bolt pins up. They seem to stop about 3/32" before full clearance. This small amount of exposed pins keeps the door from being able to be opened or closed! There is NO trouble with my lock's tumbler portion. This problem is with the deadbolt mechanism only! Can I get the deadbolt portion fixed or can I adjust it myself? Or does this mean the lock is shot? It wasn't cheap (solid brass casing, prettiest one I could find) and is about 10 years old.

SOURCE: Key will not turn on deadbolt
The pins are probably frozen. Spray some w/d in lock, then try with key, keep repeating till key turns, this should free up lock. Dirt and moisture gets in lock cyl and gets gummed up. You could also remove handle and have locksmith take apart and clean, they will then use graphite instead of w/d wich attracts dirt.

I have had this with kwikset systems before. When this happens the lock will eventually fail and become none working. The lock is damaged and cost to repair is not worth the time or money becasue these sets are very cheap and can be found at most Ace hardware or local hardware stores. Also some walmart's carry these as well.
The best solution, cheapest and less headache causing is to replace this lock with a new one. I know some peopel liek to buy sets so their deadbolt and knob are the same and kwikset does provide this setup as well. Typical price for a kwikset deadbolt only is about 15-20$USD.

You will have to remove cylinders from both sides of door, then stick a phillips screwdriver thru the bolt and push the screwdriver toward the hinge edge of the door.Might take a bit of pressure, depending on how hard its wedged into the jam, and you might break the bolt, but thats about the only way to get it out.try to determine why it got stuck before installing new one.
