You would need a Windows Install Disc, not be confused with a Recovery Disc. Then, depending on how wanted to proceed, boot your computer with the disc in it, and follow the onscreen options to either create a fresh install, or overwrite the existing one and keep the data.

SOURCE: got a virus want to set it to factory or wipe the whole thing and start fresh. HELP!!!

Before you do that , can I suggest something ? Make absolutely sure that nothing is loose...ie the battery. Recently had a battery in a laptop that was loose, causing blue screens.

I would hate to see you format when there was an easier solution to your problem.

If you have the Vista disk, insert it into the CD Rom player. When it starts it will ask you if you want to repair or install a fresh copy. If you choose repair, it will fix any missing registry files

I have a Samsung NC10 which one morning stopped working. Can only get screen with option Safe mode etc. None of the function keys work and I can't do a thing. Please can somebody help.

I suggest you remove the Hard drive from you laptop (If you are not sure how to do this, get a computer technician). Get another computer, a laptop or a desktop and connect your hard drive as a slave. Then restart the other computer so that it can detect the newly connected Hard drive. Go to the Microsoft Website and download Emergency Rescue Disk (ERD) for your operating system. Write is on a disk using any burning software like Nero. Put the cd in the cd rom for the other computer and boot from it. When you are logged in into ERD, go to My computer and identify your hard drive. This is the point where you can save your data onto the computer from your hard drive, you can as well save the drivers. Then go the Administrative tools or tasks available to you from the start menu, then choose a command called the Disk Wipe. This will wipe away all the data from your hard drive. When you are done, take the hard drive to its computer and install a fresh operating system. If you do not need to save any data from your hard drive, then you do not need to use ERD, just boot the other computer with your hard drive connected Then go start and right-click on My Computer and go to Manage. Then go to Disk Management. In the Disk management, right-click on your hard drive and select format. Use the default settings and make sure that it is formatted with NTFS.

I need to restore my acer aspire one series model ZG5 to original settings but nothing that I am finding online is helping :( Pressing alt f10 does nothing and when i do get a restore window, the only...

Well, in actual fact, there is no 'magic button' to restore a computer to it's original state. What has to be done is a fresh install of the operating system, wiping out the current contents of the hard disk. Hopefully your system came with a restore cd though sometimes the manufacturer just puts the restore data on a partition of your hard drive, and you have to restore from there, using a procedure they've (hopefully) documented. If you don't have either cd or restore partition, then be very careful just wiping your disk as you may end up having to buy a new operating system distribution disk,(expensive) then you have the grief of finding all the drivers to load plus the motherboard chipset drivers, and they can be a real pain to try and find. How do you re-boot the latitude D400 laptop

by rebooting you must mean wiping out and starting fresh? installing a new operating system. you need either the dell factory recovery disks and start the computer up on the disks. with disks inserted follow to the load from cd promptg if not start over and when the computer turns on tap del key and change boot order settings to prompt boot from a cd dvd drive before a hard drive or any device. this way it will check for operating systems in the cd before the hard drive. then continue installing your choice of factory or updated operating system enter the serial number etc etc as it prompts. it should take about one to two hours beginning to end.

Got virus laptop will not restore to earlier date takes about 12 to 15 minutes to sign on to computer. Would like to restore to origial state but that does not work either help me

You need to install a fresh copy of your operating system You need to be able to completely erase your hard drive and start fresh. If I were you I would consider changing the hard drive completely and starting fresh with a new copy of the operating system. It sounds like a worm and it has eaten through all of your restore data.

Factory settings?

Try this, if you are running xp i know it will work.

Start menu> All programs>Accessories>system tools>System restore.

This will restore your computer to factory and you won't loose any data. If you want to start fresh with nothing installed, install windows with the cd and choose fresh installation and follow the direcions.
