Yesthe sustain board should be replaced when the Buffers are replaced especially if the old buffer had a shrted drive IC as that usually damages the Y sus board also.

SOURCE: Original problem, Working great when

Hi,

Yes, you should replaced the Y scan board. I saw your board on Shopjimmy.com but before you ordered it online, check the part no. of your board on the white sticker. Replaced also all filter electrolytic capacitors in the output of the power supply feeding the Y-sustain board.
Watch the video below for more info regarding electrolytic capacitor.

Hope I helped you.
Have a nice day!
Thanks for using Fixya.

Most cases the Y-SUS, Y upper buffer, and Y lower buffer is the problem. The replace the 3 boards are located on the left side of the chassis when you open up the TV. 90% of the time this will solve the problem.
Look for burn marks on the upper and lower buffer boards (mostly around the chips with the heatsinks on them).

No picture, just sound, blown y buffer board twice1

a4.. there are 2 of them, upper and lower buffer boards.. they control the top and lower half of screen devided horizontally, i have had many run ins with these sets. and usually the buffer boards arent cheap.

they plug into the ysus( y sustain).. its possible your y sustain is blowing the buffer moduals because one of its i.c.'s under the heatsink has popped on ya.. effectively creating a short that blows the buffer boards.
remove the buffer boards, turn tv on... feel the 2 silver heat sinks on that y sustain( beware dont zap urself.. just the tip of your finger on the heatsinks)

you may find that one is cold and one is hot...if so, you need a new y sus and probably to replace the buffer boards the a4 upper and a4 lower.

If you get a new ysus.. plug the a4 upper and lowers into it, look at your picture.. if ur missing the top half the top buffer is blown or lower half the bottom buffer is blown. or..no picture they could both be blown..an easy way to tell if u have no picture to diagnose is..touch the heatsinks that sit over the chips on the buffers..if they are red hot.. they are bad and shorted internally.

Convergence is off in the lower right and upper left corner

The repair isn't too complicated if you're comfortable working with a soldering iron. Sounds like one of the "guns" is shot. The chips that need replacing are attached to the heatsink on the convergence board. The reason for replacing both chips is if you're going to bother to take the board out and replace one bad chip, that is the best time to replace the other older chip. The link below is to step by step instructions including pictures of the repair. You can check it out to see if you want to try it. If not, the repair is expensive (between 250-400) depending on the repairman. Best of luck with your convergence problem.

I have a Phillips Magnavox Model number 42PF9936D/37. A red pixel looking 2" X 7" rectangle has appeared on the plasma screen and can be seen underneath the image. How can I fix this?

We chatted previously, remember to reseat the cables that go to the section of the screen that is distorted. The Y drive boards will be on the left side of the tv (when viewed from back) and there will be about 8 ribbon cables hooking these board to the plasma panel. If you can, look at each square black chip on the board. Each chip drives the picture (row - horizontally) so one chip may be blown causing your issue. It will likely have a small pin sized hole burned in it if bad. You can replace the corresponding board (upper y, lower y) to fix the issue. Hopefully reseating the cables will do it, for a part free fix. Let me know when you get the TV open and I'll assist more. Thanks again!
