The tines are not moving forward on my Rotavator. The engine is Tecumsah Vantage 50. The tines move backwards and the engine seems fine. The rotavator will not move forward

I have seen a number of domestic rotavators but haven't yet seen one with a reverse gear. You didn't make it clear in your description whether yours has a reverse gear and that is all that is working or whether it usually only moves forward but is moving backwards?

While it is theoretically possible for a 2-stroke engine to run backwards, your engine is a 4-stroke that is incapable of running backwards and so it would seem the gear selector is stuck if it has one or someone has carried out repair work and made a mistake or something else is broken.

The only thing that comes to mind is some of the older designs used an over-long drive belt that crossed in the middle like a figure eight in order to reverse the driven pulley and replaced the belt with one that seemed the right size would cause the machine to run backwards.

More information needed, perhaps...

Check the multi pin connector on tiller and where it connects under the seat between the batteries. Most common problem.

User needs to use left hand for forward and reverse and would like wires switched

hi, you need to expose the throttle pot that is the pot attached to the lever you move to go forward or backwards, normally it a top cover known as the tiller cover, once you done that you see the throttle pot has three legs with coloured wires attached now you need to crossover the outside wires, not the centre one, by doing this you're are moving the reserve to the right hand side and the forward to the left hand side.

if you require more assistance then please let me know..

that's it,
regards

please give me feedback

Troy-bilt tiller

The only way to roll around is to remove the pins on the axle and slide the wheels in and replace the pins. If this has never been done sometime its rather hard to do. Hope this will help

My tiller does not seem to be cutting deep enough

Hi there kimberly,

Here's what you need to do.
  • Make sure the depth stake (behind the tines) is up as high as it will go. This will allow the tines to go deeper.
  • Fire it up. Set the tine rotation to reverse (more mixing and twisting.
  • Make sure the tines are actually turning, Each side is held in place with a shear pin. In case something binds the blades, this pin breaking will save the drive train
  • Note how the tiller is balanced. Wheels in the middle. You can tilt it forwards or backwards.
  • Tilting forward allows the wheels to gain traction and move the unit forward
  • Tilting Backwards allows the tines to dig in. If the surface is too hard, Press down with your body weight. It will dig through.

I hope this work out for ya

Best regards
Mike

My tiller runs great but wheels will not turn forward or backward. It is a craftsman rear tiller

The drive belt going from the motor to the gearbox may have broken or come off.

Hydrostatic tractor won't move forward or backward. I release the hydrostatic lever but it won't move.

Check the fluid level. Can you push it when it is in gear? Have you added any fluid it may have to be purged. Also do you use a pressure washer or water hose to clean it up or does it set outside it could be getting water in the transmission.
