This is (figure360) writing back with more information.

This is a business asking the question.

We use two different wireless devices.

One is the Symbol 6800 hand-held scanner, which is listed as using wireless:Optional IEEE standards-based Spectrum24 802.11 or 802.11b

The other unit is the MK1250 Symbol barcode scanner (MK1250-0N0DAKBNTWR), listed as using wireless of just 802.11b.

The 6800 unit has much better wireless connectivity than the MK1250, and I'm trying to figure out if it is because the 6800 uses the Optional IEEE standards-based Spectrum24 802.11 in addition to the 802.11b

Thanks very much for any insight you can give me into this!

i cannot make sutable IP address for my laptop to access neighbour WLAN

To better answer your question I need more information.

how many computers or devices are you trying to connect?

What is the distance between all of the computers or devices?

Are their any obstructions? Wireless signals have trouble going through thick concrete or brick walls but go through regular internal walls easy enough.

Is this business or home use?

You can learn more about the 802.11 Wireless standards here. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/802.11

I'm afraid you need to clarify:
If you refer to (old) Specification 802.11 — it applies to wireless LANs and provides 1 or 2 Mbps transmission in the 2.4 GHz band using either frequency hopping spread spectrum (FHSS) or direct sequence spread spectrum (DSSS). you can compare with 802.11b (also referred to as 802.11 High Rate or Wi-Fi) — an extension to 802.11 that applies to wireless LANS and provides 11 Mbps transmission (with a fallback to 5.5, 2 and 1-Mbps) in the 2.4 GHz band. 802.11b uses only DSSS. 802.11b was a 1999 ratification to the original 802.11 standard, allowing wireless functionality comparable to Ethernet.
But as suggested by ricerz from Wikipedia:
IEEE 802.11 is a set of standards implementing by apple wireless local area network (WLAN) computer communication in the 2.4, 3.6 and 5 GHz spectrum bands. They are maintained by the IEEE LAN/MAN Standards Committee (IEEE 802).
You cannot compare 802.11 with 802-11b: 802-11b is an implementation of part of the 802.11 standard.
You can compare: 11a (using 5Gh band) with 11b (using 2.4 Gh band)
You can compare 11 b with 11g or 11n standard. and select according to environment.
As per my personal experience Industrial or hostile installation was frequently done using 802-11A (less interferences, 54 Mb bandwith) new N standard with a peak of 300 Mb is now changing the scenario.
New accessories: Boosters, external antenna, WDS protocol to bridge WLan router, and new long range Wi-Fi are continuously changing performance, results and configuration

Hi, We have 3 problems: 1, we need to reset the password - unfortunately we have lost the original password and need to reset the log on passwords so we can track laptops connected to the network. I...

First, I appreciate the details provided by you. It could be better if you could let me know the make/ model of Access Point. Below are typical ways to address the issues highlighted by you:
1. YOU CAN RESET THE ROUTER TO FACTORY SETTINGS
You may reset router to factory setting from the reset button on the back side of the router. Press the button for few seconds, the lights on the front would blink and the router would restart with factory setting. Please note that ALL SETTING WOULD BE LOST...AND YOU WOULD HAVE TO MAKE CONFIGURATIONS AND SETTING ALL OVER AGAIN. Also, checkout the reset
procedure for your specific access point model.

2. Most routers have about 200m range. However, the actual range in real-time environment is much less. Generally the antenas are omni-directional, however, directional antenna can be used to improve range in one direction. There are two ways to increase the range/ coverage area (i) Adding external antenna of appropriate type (ii) Installing additional Access Point (AP) connecting it with the existing AP wirelessly in line-of-sight (creating WDS) OR connecting the two APs with wire, which is a better option as it provides robust and reliable connectivity between APs.

3. Based on my on-site experience, I suggest that you may relocate the AP to another location depending upon your network environment. It has always helped me a great deal. Placing the AP at the desk level, avoiding obstacles such as concrete pillars, walls, steel cabinets etc in the signal path have remarkable effect on range and overall performance of the network.

HOPE IT HELPS...Let me know if you need any further clarification assistance specific to you AP make and model. Don't forget to rate the solution if I could have been of any help!
Goodluck!

How do i hook up the desk computer in the a diffent room from the main computer

Is your desk computer (the one you want to move) wireless capable? If so, simply move it. If not add a PCI based wireless card to it OR, if it has a NIC (Network Interface Card) (integral to the mother bord or PCI based) you can run a ethernet cable back to the router. Wire is more secure and faster.

You can get these PCI cards at the Big Box Store that has computer equipment. Generally, the sales personell there can also advise you. If they have a computer service department, they can even install the equipment for you and tell you how to make it work, for a small fee.

A NIC looks like a large telephone jack. A NIC category 5 port is called a RJ-45 while a phone jack is a RJ-11 and would be found on your modem, if so equipped. The phone wire will (RJ-11) will fit into a RJ-45 but please dont dxo it. Phone voltage in your computer NIC will fry everything.

Thos light only telling you that there's a problem with the router , because the wireless light should be always ON and the power should not be blinking, first thing to do is to reset the router by pressing the reset button for 30 seconds while the power is ON then unplug the power for 5 seconds.
If still the same problem the router can is bad already and better contact the manufacturer for further troublshooting and if its still under warranty have it replace with them.....

Hope that helps...........
