Sony Bravia turns off by itself

My TV turns off by itself and the standby light starts blinking. You turn the tv back on and within 3 seconds it happens again.13 months after purchase, the power now shuts off by itself. When I unplug and replug, it turns on for only a few seconds, then goes back out. There is a blinking standby light. Four blinks, pause, four blinks...

I don't think external wiring is an issue. I removed the TV from its cabinet and plugged it into a different outlet. One post mentioned replacing the "BU mount PCB." Is this still the best solution? And idea what this will likely cost, given that it is one month out of warranty?

  • psmart Jan 13, 2009

I have checked a few things are here are my results:
Inverter board fuses check out good
Power supply board Capacitor C6000 has shorted.
Can someone tell me if I might be able to get away with replacing this cap alone, or is this way to simplistic?
    Thanks!

  • psmart Jan 13, 2009

Thanks for this advice. In fact, I just discovered that C6000 on the power supply board has shorted. I can probably replace it myself. Would you suggest that I do so, or is this just a symptom of a much larger problem?

Welcome to FIXYA! For the KV36FS76B, 4 blinks, pause, 4 blinks, etc. means "Vertical Deflection stopped" and the probable cause locations listed are as follows:

1. +15V is not supplied R8207 open (D1 board)
1. -15V is not supplied R8206 open (D1 board)
3. IC1701 is shorted (A board)

These are starting points for a qualified service technician.

It is the protection circuit cutting in and shutting off the set. This is because it detected a short or near-short circuit somewhere within the 8 or 10 sections of the set. Most common is high voltage, deflection amplifiers and main power supply.

You must know how to troubleshoot the circuit and systems in order to repair these kinds of set. You can get lucky, sometimes, by just probing around looking for something that does not look right.

If you are an electronics technician with some good skills I can give you better advice, but if not, you are better off seeking professional help.

if the set is over 3 or 4 years of age it is not a good candidate for repairs. Why? because it will just fail again, and again, and soon you will have spent so much time and aggravation you will have wished to have cut the losses and just replace it. Sorry, but that is the nature of tv sets once they start to fail.

You can have the inverter board replaced...instead of the entire panel.
KDL 40S2010: inverter part # 178950032, you will also need 2 spacers..part # 289765511
you're looking @ 200-300$ for the inverter and 5-10$ a piece for the spacers.

KDL-46V2500: inverter part # A1251295B
you're looking @ around $500-600USD for the part.

May be wise to invest in another set!?!

You have an issue with the viper ic located on the FB PCB, some models call this pcb the BU Mount depending on your model and serial number but replacing the part is pretty straight forward.

If you have already experienced this software issue, the television can
be temporarily reset by disconnecting the AC Power Cord from the wall
outlet, wait at least 30 seconds and then reconnect the AC power cord
to the wall outlet. After this reset procedure, the television should
work properly until another several months of use has accumulated.”

First unplug for a while and leave the tv with no power for one hour or so.

Four blinks is backlight failure on Bravias.

All The :

No vertical Deflection

Power supply

New cord.

Main board

ballast

Are all wrong.

Let say that we are experiencing technical problems and experts are posting on wrong questions recently.

The converter have failed, or there is a problem with converter wiring/connector. also test backlight system.

The inverter must be tested, and eventually replaced.

On australian models four blink is PSU fault on 5V.

If you are in US is backlight fault

Here is the part.

Here full codelist:

1 blink abnormal AU Power Voltage
2 blink abnormal d5v/a9v power voltage
3 blink Abnormal panel voltage
4 blink backlight failure
5 blink abnormal main power voltage
6 blink abnormal speaker voltage
7 blink internal temp. rise
8 times ic5000

The list published before was for rear projection Sony, Sony LCD does not have the vertical Deflection descripted on the wrong codelist.

Regards.

    oops, Errata,

where I wrote converter I meant Inverter.

The inverter board is a circuit that receive DC power, and returns variable higher voltage on AC to the lamps.

On your TV it may had blown, if the TV received a shock or had been moved recently, the connector may have slipped, but that is uncommon.

Contact sony to check if they offer warranty extension to cover the repair, otherwise call a local technician.

See: Sony Global - "Contact Us"

About the converter, well I am starting to think that ignorance is contagious.

Have a nice day, and good luck.

I have had this problem on a couple of sets, everytime it ended up being a power supply problem, Capacitors or a bad transistor, zener diode, regulator, etc. Best thing to do unless you know alot about electronics and soldering, you should just by a new power supply board.

4 red blinks = backlight error

this is caused by a bad inverter that lights the backlight
if it is really 13 months old call Sony and they'll hopefully help with the repair, they want happy customers..

CALL sony @ 1-800-222-7669

make sure you have:
model #
serial #
date of purchase/bill of sale

If you make a good case to them they might help with repair.. otherwise, you need a new inverter board, or worse case, a new LCD panel (hope not)

  • Unit is dead, No blinks - Problem in the standby power section. Might check fuse, R607, Q601, IC601, R612 and VDR601 (should show open).
  • Continuous blink once a second, no pausing - No reply from the jungle IC301 data bus is busy, shorted to ground, or held high), IK video path is defective.
  • One blink - not used for the self-diagnosis
  • Two blinks - B+ over current protection (OCP), unit goes to the standby mode then displays the 2 blink fault. Could be a short in the power supply of any of the circuits.
  • Three blinks - B+ over voltage protection (OVP), unit goes to the standby mode then displays the 3 blink fault. This is also a problem in the power supply circuit, check T603 and R672.
  • Four blinks - No vertical Deflection (V STOP), Screen goes to a single horizontal line then the video signal muted. Check IC1509, Q1505 on the board and replace.
  • Five blinks - AKB circuit (automatic kine bias), the timer/standby indicator blinks for about 30 seconds then goes to the self-diagnosis function. Something is wrong with the video. Check video out, Q705, 732, 761 and other components on the C board, also check Q218, 219, 220 on the A board. In addition, unit could be in IK blanking, try turning up screen slightly.
  • Six blinks - No Horizontal (H STOP), no raster, goes to the blinking self-diagnosis function immediately. Check C515 & 516 and the jungle IC, IC206.
  • Seven blinks - High voltage shutdown. The high voltage has exceeded 33k and the unit goes immediately into safety shutdown. Check power supply regulation and horizontal circuits.
  • Eight blinks - Problem with the audio (AUDIO), unit goes to standby and blinks the self-diagnosis code. Check IC406 audio amp, PS401, and 402. On some projection models of Sony TV sets, this code means that T8005 (flyback transformer), or the associative components in the high voltage circuits are defective on the D board.
  • Nine blinks - Replace D 6116 and D 6301 on the "G" board, do not resolder as this will fix the problem temporary. Or Panel Module Error or Thermal Error. If it is intermittent 9 blinks, meaning sometimes the TV comes on and other times you get flashing, then change the switching regulator on the "G" board or check connections. Make sure the regulator is -12 or -13 (negitive).
  • Ten blinks - Check Q8014 and Q8013 for shorts, leakage, or bad solder connections on the " D" board. If the transistors are bad, check R8051 and IC8005, also on the "D" board.

First up unplug the TV and leave it for 10 seconds then plug it back in to assure it is not a basic voltage error within the TV,

Check all Cabling around the back - In particular the power is secured.

Is it on a poerboard of any description? If so plug it directly into the wall to test if the powerboard has fried or not

Have there been any storm around your area lately?

May I also ask for the model name of your TV?

Take care,
Blazamane

It clearly the indicates the problem of main board getting short due to any of its capacitors or ic getting overheated and shutting off the tv .the board has to be checked by a meter to locate the faulty component and that has to be replaced.so it will work.

It could be a problem with the wiring. I assume there are other appliances plugged in around this, it could be a short circuited wire. It could be anything, with the details you provided, you could either buy a new cord/wire or call out a repair man.

If the Tv is in warranty, I would suggest to use it instead of opening the back cover, that might void the warranty.
the second issue see is The back light inverter board might be defective or the voltage from the power supply (+24v) is low or missing

The light on my TV is blinking in a 1-2-2-2-1 pattern but nothing happens when I try to turn it on

Those blinks [flashes] are fault indication (Error Codes). From the number of blinks occur at one time switch ON, you can get an idea about the faulty circuit section inside it. This will make repair easy. These are called blinking codes. Make sure about the exact number of blinking of the standby/power LED, by switching On & OFF the set, for at least two times. Count it carefully. If you wish to get some details, check the site linked here. It has details about blinking codes, and fault locating procedure, to many popular brand TVs and other devices.
