Ive got custom firmware on my psp, everything was going fine until my little brother knocked it pretty bad. My psp still starts and when I go to play a game from my memory stick it only goes as far as the title menu, then it just basically freezes.
I was thinking if I deleted my existing firmware, then reload it. Would that work?? If not any other ideas??

if you donot have a downgraded cfw psp you cannot play any games from the memory stick and nor will it display
to have the custom firmware go to a local game store and ask them to make psp 3004 cfw so you can play games from memory stick and sometimes they will charge some fees but it is worth it because you cannot make a psp 3004 model cfw it is pretty complex
Are you trying to play the game from the memory stick? Or are you trying to play a game from the UMD and retrieve the saved game data from the memory stick?
5.00 m33 is a custom firmware that allows the PSP to play games stored on a memory stick. If you upgrade to 5.50, which is an original Sony firmware, that functionality will go away. If you have custom firmware, you should never upgrade it or the features like playing homebrew or loading games from a memory stick will go away.
Earlier you have said that you were able to play games from memory stick and since you updated your psp firmware the didn't worked.
First Check your current firmware version . To do this go to
Settings > System Settings > System Information on your PSP . If you your version showing for example 5.00 M33 you are still in Custom firmware. In this case you should able to play the games from memory stick. or else you memory stick is back... or you custom settings are wrong.
If its showing for example 5.00 you are with Sony's official firmware. In this case you wont be able to play the games from memory stick. From here to make your PSP play the games from memory stick you need to Downgrade your PSP. Only way to make this possible is through Pandora Battery and Magic Memory Stick.
So please check your version and let me know so i can guide you further. Also tell me whether your PSP is PHAT or SLIM & LITE..... or check the version of your PSP by removing the battery. Underneth it find some letters and numbers PSP-100x / PSP-200x / PSP-300x
Earlier Your PSP was installed with Custom Firmware. Thats why you were able to play Backup ISO's from Memory Stick. You have now updated your firmware to Original SONY firmware and SONY wont allow you to run Backup ISO's from Memory Stick.
If you want to play Backup ISO's again you need to install Custom Firmware
Yes, what you need to do here is to format first the memory stick , using the format option on your new PSP because the memory stick should be synch first to the new PSP and make sure that the firmware of the new PSP can play ISO and CSO games, so after you format the memory stick try to load the game back and hopefully the firmware of the new PSP is a custome firmware that can play those kind of games...
simply, yes. custom firmware is hacking into your PSP to let you play games off your memory stick and run programs called "homebrew", all custom firmwareing is is unlocking the potential of your PSP to the max it can go.
You can play games you download,
Run Homebrew and etc.

Your psp must be custom firmwared for you to be able to play games from the ISO folder, to custom firmware it, it must have a pandora battery and the files required.
You can buy pandoras batterys and a magic memory stick off ebay for a reasonable price.
Hope this helps
