SOURCE: MY GATEWAY LAPTOP NO LONGER RECEIVES POWER.

Motherboard or harddrive? I'm betting it's more towards the motherboard. The DC Power Jack to be more specific. This is the port where the AC adapter, (Charger), plug is plugged into.

The DC Power Jack is not much bigger, than the plug for the AC adapter that plugs into it. There are small pin leads that are on the bottom of this jack, and they go through the motherboard, and are soldered to the motherboard.

Accidental bumping of the AC adapter plug, while plugged into the DC Power Jack, can damage the jack. It can break the connections for the adapter plug, and/or can crack the solder joints for those small pin leads.

[Laptops use DC electricity. A flashlight battery, and a laptop battery, are examples of stored DC electricity. DC electricity has two poles. Positive and Negative. The DC Power Jack has two connections. Positive and Negative. {Even if the DC Power Jack has multiple holes in it]

There is also another known problem associated with DC Power Jacks. It may stem from a bad motherboard design.

More to the point, the area where the DC Power Jack mounts on the motherboard. In this design, the DC Power Jack motherboard area, is almost a separate part of the motherboard. It's shaped like a Peninsula. (Think of an island, with one side connected to the mainland)

This peninsula shape, has the tendency to crack away from the main body of the motherboard. Circuit traces are broken.

When the AC adapter plug is setting in a certain position, it presses the two broken halves of the circuit traces together, for a momentary contact. As the AC adapter plug is moved from this position, the circuit trace halves are moved apart, and there is no contact.

(No distribution of electricity from one circuit trace half, to the other circuit trace half. Think of a circuit trace as a very, thin, flat copper wire. When a circuit trace is broken, there is essentially a wire that is broken into two parts)

Solution?
See if the DC Power Jack can be repaired, (Solder joint connections re-soldered), or replaced.
If the DC Power Jack motherboard area is the aforementioned peninsula shape, it may require replacement of the motherboard.

There are very FEW, computer repair shops that have the technical expertise to replace a DC Power Jack. Easy fix is to simply replace the motherboard. (More $$$$$ too)

However, some laptops DO require replacement of the motherboard for this repair.
Bad motherboard design, for the DC Power Jack area on the motherboard.

Re-solder DC Power Jack solder joints? (IF, this is the problem) Average is $50 to $75 (US)
Replace DC Power Jack? Average is $125 to $150. (US)
Replace motherboard? Depends on the Gateway model. Could be $225 to $400 (US)

[Yes, most of the time the cost warrants just replacing the laptop itself, as the cost of replacing, is close to the repair cost)

Just to SHOW you ab average DC Power Jack, and the repair involved of replacing. (Doesn't show you, that the entire laptop needs to be disassembled, down to the bare motherboard in hand)

This is NOT a recommendation to replace the DC Power Jack yourself! It is just for knowledge of what is partially involved. (You can accidentally burn the motherboard when desoldering, or soldering, rendering the motherboard useless)

My computer was dropped and broke the power button along with the plastic case around it

Hi aprilbonham,

I recommend contacting your computer manufacturer and ask assistance with their technical support. Ask if they could repair the system even you accidentally dropped the computer. Most of physical damage voids out the warranty so you need to contact them to check if your system is still in warranty and can cover induced damage.

Hope it helps.

Thanks for using FixYa

All of a sudden, my gateway laptop nv52 screen dims on AC and brightens on battery power. It must be a key combination because I suspect my cat walked across the keyboard.

Hi,

Try this, press function(Fn) and the power up button/down button. that will fine tune the middle setting your laptop. the middle setting is one of 3 settings, you need to press function and f8 to switch between lowest, middle, and high. the middle setting can be any setting you like and will be the default setting when you use your computer with a chord or without it.

Thank You

How do I enable the wireless switch on a Gateway mx8711

HI there,

Most Gateway® notebooks have a designated multi-function button or function key to turn your wireless on and off. This information is located in your notebook's user guide.
The user guides for the Gateway® branded notebooks are installed on your hard drive. To access your user's guide, from the Start menu, point to All Programs, and then click Gateway Documentation. User guides are also located on the Gateway® Web site. To download or view a copy of the user's guide from Gateway.com, select your notebook type from the Notebook User Guides support page. Another source of reference for networking your computer is the Gateway Notebook Networking Guide. Quick reference:
  • Gateway® M675 - Multi-function button (last on right)
  • Gateway® 200ARC - Multi-function button (last on right)
  • Gateway® M505 - Multi-function button (first on top)
  • Gateway® M500 - Multi-function button (first on top)
  • The Gateway® M275 notebook uses the system keys FN+F7
  • Most other notebooks use FN+F2
Hope this helps you out.

I have a 7210 GX. Th eon/off button contains a small tab which actually activates the on/off function. This small tab broke off and I'm trying to find a replacement/solution Any sources?? Thanks...

If you still have the tab that activates the switch they can sometimes be glued back on. The keyboard cover includes the power button. You can find them on ebay for 1/3 of what the are from a parts depot.

Gateway nv52 won't turn on

I also had this problem. I turned it off and it would not turn on. I found the solution. First, extend the laptop screen as far back as it will go. Don't just stop the screen at a ninety degree angle. My laptop screen pulls back to about 135 degrees. Now press the power button. It should start up.

Why do I think this works? Well...I used to own an older model thinkpad that had a short "male" connector on the screen, that when the screen was folded down would enter into a "female" connector on the base of the unit and trigger sleep mode on the unit. This is how the system could automatically hibernate when the screen was closed. The little male connector broke off, and I couldn't get the system to wake up, because the connection to tell the laptop that I had the screen up or down no longer worked. I couldn't even power it up. I had to take an ink pen and push the connector through the female end to indicate to the motherboard that I'd opened the screen before it would even turn on.

It appears that the same type of mechanism is built into the long BAR under the screen of the NV52 and somehow it can't determine when the screen is open or closed. If it detects that the screen has not been opened, it won't power up. This safeguard prevents the laptop from being turned on mistakenly while closed up in your laptop bag. Extending the screen back resets the mechanism and it should turn on. Sorry for the long explanation...

Dropped my gateway laptop. Now it wont charge battery.

If you do not have either a manufacturer warranty or extended warranty from the retailer use it now. Contact them. Avoid telling them that you dropped the computer...you will void a manufacturer warranty. If you don't have either option then you can continue portability with an external laptop battery. They tend to be heavy, but they tend to provide 5 or more hours of portable use. The extended battery plugs into the same socket as your regular external power supply. I have included some links for product options.

Hi,

I,m afraid you can,t power up the computer any other way.
Laptop power buttons, have a make/break connection. Some power several items at the same time. You,ll need to buy a replacement Switch or switch panel, with the pwr switch on it.

If you give me the Laptop Make/Model.
I,ll search for the part for you.
