Go here, and follow the section on "Recovery from the startup screen (during system boot)" and see if that helps. If there is a Factory Reset Partition, this procedure will put your machine back to how it was shipped. You will probably still have Windows 7 setup questions to answer the first time.

Hello,

Sounds like you have may have it run on startup. Just to see you can use msconfig to temporarily disable it by following these steps:

Hello,

That usually means that a program that starts when Windows starts isnt functioning correctly, You can test it by clixking Start > Run > type Msconfig and press enter. After that click the startup tab. Here you will see programs that load when Windows starts.

If you recognize the program thats causing the issue, simply click the box to the left of the item to uncheck it and click OK. You will then be prompted to restart.

As the machine restarts, check to see if the issue has disappeared.

If so, great. Be aware that you that you will be prompted with a "System Configuration Utility" dialog that lets you know you are using Msconfig. If you don't want to be warned of this, click the box that says "Dont show this message..." and click OK.

If not, run Msconfig again, and uncheck the next suspicious program and repeat the process until the problem disappears.

Below is a link with information on using Msconfig. It also has other links that include information of some of the programs that you might see in the startup window of Msconfig.

http://www.netsquirrel.com/msconfig/msconfig_xp.html

NOTE:
There's is a "Disable all" button under the startup tab. But I wouldn't suggest using that initially. It is better to uncheck them one at a time so you can see what is causing the issue.
Hope this helps. Please remember to rate this information.
Thanks

How to format a disk

Instructions
  1. Formatting and Installing from the Windows XP CD
    • 1 This section explains how to reformat a drive from the Windows XP installation CD. This can be used when installing a fresh copy of Windows onto a computer. Here it is especially important to backup all of your important information because upon formatting you will lose EVERYTHING that used to be on the drive. This includes all applications and device drivers, so you must back up everything you can.
    • 2 Insert your Windows XP installation disc into your CD drive (Home or Pro--it does not matter).
    • 3 Now as you computer boots a little more it will say "Press any key to boot from CD.." press a key to do so.
    • 4 The CD will load up a blue screen and then spend a while loading files it needs. When it is finished it will list a few options, mainly "Press ENTER to set up Windows XP." Press Enter or Return.
    • 5 Now you will be at a screen to select where to install Windows to. This is where you can delete old partitions and format drives. The box in the bottom half of the screen shows all your drives and the partitions that exist on them. Use the Up and Down arrow keys to highlight your "C:" partition and press the 'D' key (if all that shows up is "Unpartitioned space" and you have no C: or D: partitions, skip this step). On the next screen press the 'L' key to finalize deleting the partition.
    • 6 Now you are back on the screen to choose where to install Windows. The box on the lower half of the screen should no longer show a partition but simply have an entry "Unpartitioned space xxxxxMB." Select this with the arrow keys and press the 'C' key to create a partition on the drive. The next screen tells you the minimum and maximum sizes the partition can be and lets you pick the size. The default size is the maximum, but double check that the number entered is the maximum and hit enter.
    • 7 Now you will again be back at the choose where to install Windows screen. But this time you will have a partition that looks something like this "C: Partition1 [New (Raw)]xxxxxxMB." Highlight this entry and press enter.
    • 8 The next screen lets you choose which file system to format the drive with. Choose NTFS as it is faster and more secure. If the drive is brand new and has never been used before then use one of the options that ends in "(Quick)." Or, choose one of the lower down options. Use the arrow keys to select the proper one and press Enter or Return.
    • 9 From here you are all set and the installation of Windows will proceed starting with a format of your drive. This will take a while (over half an hour) so you can take a little break.

How to Format a Floppy Disk
Instructions Things You'll Need
  • Floppy Disk Drive
  • Floppy Disks
    • 1 Insert a floppy disk into the floppy disk drive.
    • 2 Double-click the My Computer icon.
    • 3 Right-click the icon for the floppy disk drive, usually labeled 3 1/2 Floppy (A:).
    • 4 Choose Format from the menu that appears.
    • 5 Click Start.

Format a CD or DVD

Before you can copy files to a CD or DVD, the disc must first be prepared using a process called formatting. There are several ways to format a CD or DVD disc. Your choice of format determines which computers and other devices will be able to read the disc.

  1. Insert a disc into your computer's CD or DVD drive.

  2. In the dialog box that appears, click Burn files to disc.

  3. In the Burn a disc dialog box, type a name for your new disc.

  4. Click Show formatting options, and then click one of the following formatting options:

    • Live File System

    • Mastered

  5. Click Next to prepare the disc.

Trying to run my old HPP game in windows 7 but can't get compatability

There is a good chance that you won't be able to run that game on windows 7 with any sort of compatability mode. There is however another more advanced method that can be used to run very old games. You can set up a virtual machine on your windows 7 operating computer, and on this virtual machine install an earlier copy of windows, windows 98 for instance, which will run the game just fine.

To do this you need a copy of windows 98, thats the easy bit.

Then you need to download and install Windows Virtual PC and check your software compatibility. The download link can be found here.

Once you have Windows Virtual PC installed then you will need to set up your first virtual machine.
  • Start up the program
  • A wizard will pop up and help you through the creation of your first VM
  • Select "Create Virtual Machine" and then click Next
  • Select the Name For Your VM then click Next
  • Then from the drop down menu to the left select Windows 98 and click Next
  • Select "Using The Recommended Ram" then click Next
  • Select "A New Virtual Hard Disc" then click Next
  • My Suggestion is to leave these at Default, then click Next
  • Check over the details and click Finish.
That should see your first VM Setup. Now go to the Virtual PC Console, select the VM you just created and click start. You should see a window that pops up showing what appears to be a PC starting up. That is the virtual PC starting up just like your pc would. Starting up for the first time can take quite a while so be patient.

The VM should then display the message "Reboot and Select proper Boot Device or Insert Boot Media in selected Boot device".

It's at this point you need your copy of Windows 98, on you VM window you will see on the menu bar at the top of the window the drop down "CD" click on this and select your disc method, which CD drive the disc is in or if it's an ISO file select that option.

Once you have that selected then:
  • Press the space bar and the screen should change
  • Select boot from CD-ROM, press enter
  • Select Start Windows 98 Seyup from CD-Rom, press enter
  • Press Enter when promted to
  • Select Configure unallocated disc space, press enter
  • Select, "Yes, Enable large Hard Disc Support". press enter
  • Press Enter when promted, the VM will now restart
  • Repeat the first 3 steps
  • Setup should now be formatting your virtual hard drive
  • Press Enter when prompted
  • The Windows setup Wizard should now be running
  • Follow the wizard through and Windows will start installing
  • During this process the VM wil restart several times
  • Once the VM restarts and again promts to start from CD-Rom or Hard Drive, select Hard Drive, then press enter.
  • Once your VM starts up in Windows 98, proceed with the installation of the game and any other software it needs.
Once you've done all this you will have the perfect compatibilty platform set up for any old games you own, as it is Windows 98 not some mode stuck on the side of you version of windows.

This is quite a long and complicated method, but it will work and it will allow you to play just about any pre 2000 game going.

Unique customer Registration for MYOB Plus 11 I used MYOB 7 for years, and it worked all the way up to Windows 7 - now it won't even start. Its time to leave. I have a copy of MYOB Plus 11 that seems to...

Or, just get a version of windows 7 (look for "Windows Anytime Upgrade" on your computer) that can run a virtual XP machine (Pro or Ultimate versions), then download and install the virtual PC hyper-viser kernal and the XP Mode virtual machine.

Next, install your old copy of MYOB 7 into the XP mode virtual machine, copy your data files, and it should work....

EXPLANATION OF "WHY": MYOB 7 was actually meant to run on windows 95/98 machines, and this wasn't a problem in XP, because it could run a program that would basically emulate all of the win95/95 API's, under which MYOB 7 could run. Starting with windows vista, those old API's and emulation programs were basically tossed. Running the program under a virtual XP machine will give your old programs, like MYOB 7, access to those old API's. BTW, once the program is installed, it should auto register with windows 7. After which it will run in the win 7 interface almost as if it were a native program (will take longer to load as it has to load XP OS too).

One note, any custom forms (invoices, etc) may not work after copying them to the new installation of MYOB. Change their file attributes from Read Only (uncheck that box from within the files' properties dialog, via windows file explorer).

Oh, you'll definitely want as much RAM in your computer as you can get in there. XP mode will take a minimum of 512MB, but it'll be slow unless you set it up for at least a gig of ram.
