Faulty Ram Controller?

Using Memtest86+ V2.01 ram in slot 1 (top slot) is reported as DDR1 CAS 3-2-2-0, in slot 2 (bottom slot) is reported as DDR11 CAS 4-4-4-12, both are FSB 133. The ram is GEIL 1Gb PC2-5300 DDR11-667 CL 5-5-5-15, I am using 2Gb in total. Is there a problem maybe with the memory controller or something else related? Memtest completes tests on both slots without a problem. I am using Windows Vista Home Basic and have intermittant system lockup and have to power off to restart the system, ctrl-alt-del will not work. When lockup happens I will get a problem with the screen picture of multiple lines in three columns down the screen with short black bars 2-3mm thick about 25mm long and 25mm apart from top to bottom and flickering. When this happens the system will not respond to mouse or keyboard and power off by power button will only work.

It is a Acer Aspire 4710Z laptop and has a basic bios, not many changes available. The Memtest86+ that I used is a full test and takes approx 15min to run on this system. I have noted the s/n of the ram slices and if they are not put 7000101 in bottom and 7000102 in top the system will power up but no bios check or system load will happen.

  • Stephen Jan 13, 2009

The system is about one & a half years old approx and I am having random system lockup problems with a degraded display being the first symptom when it happens.

  • Stephen Jan 13, 2009

If the ram or a controller connected to it is having problems, couldn't it cause display problems or lockup the system. I am also thinking of backing up the system and doing a full new install of windows, drivers etc...

  • Stephen Jan 15, 2009

Do you rustyk123 know of a good tester for the onboard video, I had a look at a friends acer laptop and ran the memtest on his and got the precise info on his memory slices at the stated cas and ddr type. Unfortunately it was not the exact same model but it proved the memtest I am using is ok. I am definately going to back up the system data and do a full install of windows for good measure but not hopeful as I feel it is hardware not software.

  • Stephen Feb 03, 2009

Bingo I have the problem nailed down to bad ram slice. Used latest memtest86+ V2.11 on each slice individually over and over 4 times and bingo one finally waved its hand and gave up. Thanks to all for your help and advice.

sounds like a display issue to me when is the last time you updated your hardware drivers?

  • Dan rogers

It also kinda sounds like your cpu or the graphics card may be having issues. How old is the system?

Can you change your CAS/RAS latency in the advanced BIOS options? And did you do the quick tests or the full tests with memtest? (Just curious...This is an interesting issue.)

This does sound to be video problems. This could be caused by one of two things. 1) Faulty Video card 2) Faulty Memory/controller. I would sugest running a program to test the video card if it passes, try removing the top stick of memory (the one being falsely read) and try running it for some time under its normal use to test this.

How to install ram memory on e644g-0663 laptop

http://support.gateway.com/us/en/emachines/notebook/2011/eMachines/eme/eme644g/eme644gnv.shtml

http://support.gateway.com/emachines/notebook/2011/eMachines/eme/eme644g/eme644gsp2.shtml

Up to 8GB of DDR3 Sdram ram memory that is SO-DIMM for laptops, and 1066MHz.

That is PC2-8500 that is SO-DIMM

An example,

http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=4505186&CatId=4153

There are TWO Ram Memory slots. EACH one has a maximum amount of 4GB.
Total Maximum Amount of Ram Memory is 8GB.

IF, just one Ram Memory module ('Stick'), is to be used, it is placed in ram memory Slot 1. (DIMM 1)

(The Processor reads what is in Slot 1 first. Cannot have ram memory in Slot 2, and not Slot 1 also )

What?
No that's okay Acer/Gateway/eMachines!

I have access to the SERVICE MANUAL, bahahahaha! Your lack of info doesn't bother us...........

http://www.manualowl.com/m/eMachines/E644G/Manual/258030

This is a PDF file. Scroll the page down using the scroll bar all the way to the right, until the top header of the PDF file reader shows.

To the immediate right of the number 216 at the top, is the Page Down Arrow.
To the left of the number 216 is the page number box.
The PDF reader page numbers do Not match the actual manual's pages.

Put your mouse cursor in the page number box.
Backspace the 1 out.
Left-click once.
Type -> 95
Press the Enter key on your keyboard.

(In the Top header is also the controls for view size.
To the left of the page number box is a Slider that is a blue 'Dot'.
Left-click on the blue 'Dot', hold the left mouse button down, and drag it to the left to Decrease the view size.
To the right to Increase view size )

Base Door removal

Bottom of laptop facing you, open Battery Compartment to the Top, away from you, the Base Door is at the bottom.
Rectangular cover that has two Philips screws holding it on.

One screw at the Top/Middle, one screw at the Bottom/Middle.
Remove these two screws, do not lose them. (Double-sided sticky tape to table, and stick the screws to the tape )

BEFORE beginning;
Remove ALL power. Remove the AC adapter (Charger), and Battery.

To go on;
This is a general example of a laptop SO-DIMM ram memory module,

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:1GB_DDR2_SO-DIMM.png

Note the Locating Notch on the bottom, and the two Side Notches on either side.

The Locating Notch at the bottom, lines up with a Locating Lug in the bottom of the ram memory slot.
For this reason it can ONLY be installed in one direction.

There are spring clips that 'snap' into the Side Notch/es.
The top of one spring clip is eased to the outside of the laptop.
Now ease the other spring clip to the outside.

Once both spring clips are freed from the Side Notches, the ram memory module should pop up a little.

(Sometimes you have to keep one spring clip, held out with one hand, and with the other hand move the other spring clip out )

Remove the Ram Memory module, at almost the SAME angle as it is now. Slightly tilted.

DO NOT bring the Ram Memory module straight up, or you will damage the gold plated contact pins of the Ram Memory module, and also the contact pins down in the ram memory slot.

Notice how ram memory in Slot 1, (Slot A), is on top of the ram memory module in Slot 2. (Slot B)
If you have two ram memory modules installed, you have to remove the top ram memory module, first. (Slot A)

Again, if you are just going to use ONE ram memory module, it goes in Slot 1 (Slot A)

Look at the ram memory slot, and the Locating Lug in the bottom, and/or observe which way the Locating Notch on the ram memory module was, before you took it out.

Line the ram memory module up with the Locating Lug.
Install it at the same angle roughly, that you took it out at.

Once in the correct position the spring clips 'bumps', will snap down into the Side Notches, of the ram memory module.
(Click / Click)

Reinstall the Base Door.
Reinstall the Battery.
Attach the AC adapter (Charger), and plug the AC adapter into power.

(ALWAYS plug into the laptop FIRST, then plug into power. Otherwise a power surge could happen, and burn out electronic components in the power section of the motherboard)

WAIT 1 minute, turn the laptop on. BIOS will recognize the ram memory. You're done.

I want to upgrade my Laptop NX 5000 RAM which is currently 256 mb. Please suggest in details what type of ram is reqd i.e. DDR, DDR1/2 and what about 180/200 pins

You can upgrade to 2GB.
(1024MB.
512 MegaByte + 512MB = 1024MegaByte
1024MB = 1GigaByte )

It is DDR Sdram.
(Double Data Rate Synchronous Dynamic Random Access Memory)

It is also SO-DIMM, as used for laptops.
(Single Outline Dual Inline Memory Module)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SO-DIMM

There are 200 gold plated contact pins. 100 on each side,

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:1GB_DDR2_SO-DIMM.png

Note the Locating Notch on the bottom, and how it is off to one side.
Note the Side Notch on each side.

There is a Locating Lug in the bottom of the ram memory slot, for the laptop.
The ram memory module must be turned to the Locating Notch lines up with the Locating Lug.

There are spring clips on each side of a ram memory module.
The tops of the spring clips are eased to the outside.

This allows a bump, or protrusion on the spring clip, to come out of the Side Notch.
When the ram memory module is ensured to be seated correctly, in the ram memory slot, the spring clip 'bump' will be in the Side Notch.

A laptop ram memory module is removed AT AN ANGLE!
NOT too much more than the angle it is in, when installed in the ram memory slot.

After the two spring clips are eased out, the ram memory module will pop up a little bit.
Slide it out AT THAT ANGLE.

If you it up to a straight up position, you will damage the gold plated contact pins of the ram memory module, and the contact pins in the ram memory slot.

Damage the contact pins in the ram memory slot, and you are looking at motherboard replacement.

Everywhere on the ram memory module is the BODY, except for the gold plated contact pins.
Handle the ram memory module by the Body.
The Body is coated with a see-through protective plastic.

Refrain from touching the gold plated contact pins.

[ DDR Sdram IS DDR1. Double Data Rate Sdram.
DDR2 Sdram is Double Data Rate 2 Sdram.
DDR3 Sdram is Double Data Rate 3 Sdram,

1) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DDR_SDRAM

2) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DDR2_SDRAM

3) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DDR3_SDRAM

It is the Technology used, not referring to the size ]

DIMM for desktops, Dual Inline Memory Module
SO-DIMM for laptops.
Single Outline Dual Inline Memory Module.

You need SO-DIMM, with 200 pins, and it's Frequency Rate, ('Speed'), is rated at 333Megahertz. (333MHz)
That is PC2700.

Only one ram slot works

Latops have two RAM slots and they usually are located on the bottom of the laptop.
If you see only one RAM slot on the bottom of your laptop then this is RAM slot is number 2, the other RAM slot is located under the keyboard and this memory slot is RAM slot number 1 and the first RAM module in installed in this RAM slot.

My laptop n5110 i3 inspiron gives 5 beeps twice before start-up then runs normal

5 beeps indicates a problem with ram, but to do this twice then run ok, indicates a potential problem that may occur in the future.

Have you checked if both Ram sticks are the same speed and brand?
Also, see if one ram module is getting hotter then the other after use, this would indicate it is about to possibly fail soon.
Try booting with one ram module at a time, in different slots.

Best check though is to download this:
http://www.memtest86.com/download.html

or

http://www.snapfiles.com/get/memtest86.html

Run this and it will predict any failure in the ram

Have a gateway mt3423 when i power on no display i have already bought new memory 1 gig ddr pny removed battery held power button put memory in top and bottom slots still nothing but power light steady on...

You could have memory problem, incompatible RAM or faulty RAM.
Are the RAM the same make and model?
Try inserting one RAM module one at a time to determine the faulty RAM.
When one RAM module works, then insert the 2nd RAM module to see if it works, Swap RAM around in the RAM slots.

Hi, I would like to upgrade the original 512 MB memory. We have just found the second slot (just under the keyboard!!!) and now I have the following question: can I keep the old 512 MB RAM module and...

What type of RAM is your Pc using? SDR, DDR1 or DDR2? 1 GB single module of RAM maight be heavier for your notepad and the Laptop maight even fail to boot. Just use the 2 Modules of Ram (2 chips each 512MB) and check in BIOS if the RAM capacity has acually changed.

Program encountered error and needs to close

Ram is often machine Dependant, will work in one NOT in another, so this is why it is very important to get add to exactly the same ram that was in the unit to begin with OR manufacturers recommendations. The problems you describe are typical of a RAM problem 120 errors is 120 too many.

I ran diagnostics on my Dell Inspiron 1525. Results: Data Bus stress test failed. Memory compare error, DIMM-B. Suggestion: try to reseat the memory. How should I do? Please help! Thanks T.Doan

1. reseat the ram
2. at the buttom part of the laptop you will see a window covered which will allow you to remove and have the ram be reseated.
3. take out 1 ram firs then run test then run again the test using the other slot. please test each ram on each slot. check if the faulty if the ram or either of the rams of one of the slots. if both ram passed on one of the slots means that ram is ok and slot is not, so then replace the motherboard. if one ram errors on a slot which the ram passed then that ram might be faulty and needs replacement.

Hello, I have a Satellite A15 @129 w/756 MB RAM. I'd like to upgrade but don't know the maximum RAM stick each slot will take and don't remember if there are 2 slots or 4. Thanks, RD

The maximum RAM for this laptop can up to 1 GB DDR1 266MHz RAM and 2 memory slot available, so since u have already 756 MB RAM in your laptop, that mean 1 of your RAM stick is 512MB and another 1 is 256MB, so if u need to upgrade, u have to replace the 256MB with 512MB to make it 1GB maximum.
