If you don't want to go through hp try finding the drivers at the problem with going about it like this is that you will have to register with one of these websites and you will probably get a bunch of spam mail so my suggestion is to go to
and make up a e-mail account to have all the junk mail sent to and register with that e-mail

Sometimes you can just go to add new hardware
click on the device or go to the bottom and add new device when you find your device allow the wizard to search over the internet for the driver.
If this does'nt work you can go on the internet and type in your device followed by free driver downloads.

No sound and neither disc drawers work.

Hook up just one of the dvd drives and see if the BIOS detects it. Press F2 to go into the BIOS when you first turn on your computer. Setup the defaults in the BIOS. If it detects the one drive, then let it boot up into windows to see if you can get the drive to work. If you can or can't then try the other drive and see if you can get that one to work. This way your trying both at different times to see if you can get either or both to work.

Make sure the jumpers on the back of them are set to master as your trying both of them one at a time. If you can get both of them to work seperately, then the next step is to try both of them together buy setting the top drive as the master and the bottom one as the slave.

If you can get both of them to work then that means the drive is good, if one or both doesn't work then you know one or both drives are bad.

As far as the sound goes, make sure its enabled in the BIOS and then go back into windows, If you don't see the speaker in the bottom right hand corner and still no sound, then go ahead and download the latest driver for your sound located here:

Under the audio option, download and install the Sigmatel driver. If after you download and install that driver the sound still doesn't work, then the sound chipset on the motheboard is bad and in that case you'll have to buy a new sound card.

The microphone cannot be detected and the SoundMax

It could be as simple as needing to reinstall your sound drivers.
Also try going to control panel, sound, click on sound be sure your device is listed.
Go to the propeties tab find levels scroll down to the bottom to microphone.Turn it up.
Also make sure your in the right input on your motherboard or back of the pc.mic is usually coded as pink.

Hope this helps.

My HP compaq d530 doesn't detect any USB drive. I'm trying to upload a sound driver onto it and I don't have a CD. I put the driver onto a USB drive but the computer doesn't detect the drive. I just...

So we have two problems one your sound is not working and two your usb drive is not detecting any connected devices, correct?
Starting with the sound simply use a friends computer to burn the audio driver onto a cd. Next install the driver on your machine.
Problem two the usb. Remove the flash drive and try plugging in any other usb device such as a printer or camer or cell phone and see if windows says found new hardware. You don't need to install it this will simply tell you if your usb port is functioning or has a problem. if you do get a found new hardware message then your usb port is functioning and may only have a problem seeing your flash drive. Try uninstalling the usb port in System Properties. Right click on My Computer then left click on Properties. Now click on the Hardware tab. Now click on Device manager. Now go to the bottom where the usb devices are and uninstall all usb devices and when your done restart the machine. See if you can use your flash drive now. Other wise check your bios settings for the usb devices to see that they are infact set correctly and if you cant do this take it to your local pc repair shop and they can do this for you.
Hope this helps.

I've got no sound from my HP Pavilion laptop - any ideas? Thanks.

Go to Control Panel>Device Manager to see if there are any yellow exclamation marks next to any devices. Also in Control Panel go to Sound or Audio Devices to see if there are any audio devices listed in Hardware. Without knowing which operating system I cannot guide you step-by-step but if this is a driver or hardware not recognized issue you can go to the manufacturer web site for drivers if you do not have a drivers cd. Here's the drill: Go to this link and enter your exact model number: After you do that you will be asked your operating system, XP then a list of drivers will be provided. You need to download the chipset drivers, the audio drivers and any other drivers applicable to your hardware.   There is also a hardware auto-detect feature there where your computer will be automatically detected and the same list of drivers provided with an option to install directly or just download if you are not using the same computer for which you need drivers.  A folder called "hp" will be created on your C drive. Go to Control Panel>System>Device Manager and you will see a yellow exclamation mark, !, next to all of the devices that need drivers. Click on those devices, go to Update Driver and point the browse window to that "hp" folder and the drivers will be loaded.  Burn these drivers to disk so that if you reinstall in the future you are good to go. Let me know if you have any questions and I will help. Steve Medley
