Question about Dell 1320c Laser Printer

12 Answers

Black is faint. All other colors good. Dell 1320C

I have replaced the toner cartridge with a Dell Cartridge but there is no difference. It appears that the toner is there but not much is getting onto the paper for black only.

When I look further it appears it is mainly in the printed letters. Diagrams with black parts appear almost solid although they are little mottled whereas the print quality for black is very faint and grey Printing in color is good.

  • cscoxk Jan 12, 2009

I cannot find a calibration test? I have been looking for something that might "clean" the machine but there does not appear to be such a program. The only thing I can find are is the toolbox for the printer but it does not appear to have a calibration program.

  • cscoxk Jan 12, 2009

This is a laser printer not an inkjet so I would have thought it unlikely to have the same ink type problems as inkjets. The quality of the printing is the same. It almost appears as though the print settings for black are set to faint - if there is such a thing - but I have been unable to find such a setting.

  • cscoxk Jan 12, 2009

When I first received the printer it printed well. I have tried 2 new black toner cartridges but I think the old one has toner in it.

  • cscoxk Jan 14, 2009

Anyone any other ideas on how this can be fixed or indeed if it is possible. The annoying thing is the purchase of two cartridges that cost about the same as buying a new printer. I will certainly be much more careful about buying anything from Dell. I have tried calling Dell help but they suggested I buy another cartridge!!!

  • cscoxk Jan 14, 2009

As mentioned it is a laser printer not an inkjet printer so the suggestion does not apply.

  • cscoxk Jan 14, 2009

Question is making faint black printing on Dell color laser printer darker. Cartridge replaced. Colors print well. Only black text is the problem.

  • johnnyheaven Mar 17, 2009

Same Issue with three of these printers now. Color is Ok but not great and the black is faint. Almost as it is in a "draft" mode except it was never set.

Multiple toner changes have not given any improvement. Printer was working fine when new.

  • katie366 Mar 31, 2009

I have only printed 400 pages since I bought my printer (2 months ago) and since I have replaced the black cartridge with a new one from dell, I have very faint grey text. I have e-mailed dell 2 weeks ago for support and still heard nothing.

  • Anonymous Apr 30, 2009

Print Cartridge not registering, slot damaged, does anyone know of a parts store for Dell 1320 printer parts.

  • Anonymous May 06, 2009

Exactly the same as the problem reported by 3 people -- my DELL 1320 arrived and printed OK 900+ pages, then it started to print just the black parts of a page very faint (grey).

I bought an expensive replacement toner cartridge, thinking it was running out of black, but the problem persists...

It seems a design fault. Oh dear, DELL will never admit to that...

same for me. Dell is a shame

I have just got around this issue by going into the printer properties, click the "Printing Properties" button, click the "Printer Status" button, go to the "Printer Settings" screen select the "Printer Maintenance" tab, select the "Non-Dell Toner", tick the Non-Dell Toner box and click the "Restart printer to apply new settings" button. Print a test and then reverse the process.

Thank you! It worked perfectly after I'd tried all sorts of other things including air cleaning the PHD unit etc. I was beginning to think I would have to buy another printer, but your solution sorted the problem.

Thank you! Out of the blue, in the middle of a christmas gift project, red decided to not print. I tried many things to no avail. I started to shop for a new color laser printer when I found your suggestion and it worked! My Dell 1320c is printing red again! Yay!

This isn't a fault with the printer, IT IS A FAULT WITH THE WAY IT HAS BEEN SET UP!
The problem is, not all of the tabs have been removed from the PHD unit inside. In order to remove these, you need to open the front cover of the printer, move the four tabs 90 degrees and pull the whole PHD out. You will then see the four yellow tags on the side.
Having printed with the tags in means the PHD has been potentally damaged. If you're lucky, you'll get away with removing the tags now and it will return to normal after about 50 pages, it not then you'll need a new PHD. The reason the problem manifests itself with black first is because the black is the most commonly used colour.

For info on removing all the tags, see here:

I'm not sure if this will help you but this is a guide from dell on improving faint printing. It's worth giving it a try: http://support.dell.com/support/topics/global.aspx/support/dsn/en/document?c=ca&cs=cahied1&dl=false&l=en&s=hied&docid=3B72A6DD0C6ED785E040A68F5B28594B&doclang=en

I've had the grey problem along with a groaning squeak for a while now. Tried everything while printing one page of graph paper at a time then resetting if it didn't work. I got a very slight improvement after switching on toner saving mode, printing 1 copy then setting it back to off. The big improvement came when i changed altitude in the settings to 3000m. It took a while for the machine to reset but the improvement was immediate and back to it's former excellent output. Printed one sheet, set it back to 2000m, then 1000m and finally back to sea level with no detrimental effect on the output.
Best of all it has cured the really annoying squeak!
Hope this helps somebody else.

I have an idea what's wrong, if anyone is still following this thread. I realised that I get these stupid faint prints when my 1320c doesn't seem to take the proper amount of time heating up. Can't do anything about it, but leave it to stand by and starting it up again, hoping it would go into the process of heating up properly.
Not very technical, but this is what I've observed. Annoys me like crazy when it happens.

I took an air compressor and blew out everything except the ink cartrage. The first time I cleaned it out I blew off the base unit with the mirrors. These are talked about alot on the internet. This did not help much because the mirrors where clean already. Then I took the PHD unit out and blew the hell out of it and alot of ink dust came out. I kept blowing it out untill no more ink came out and everything was clean. Be carrful not to touch the rollers with your fingers. It helped alot. Good luck and Happy New YEAR!!!!

Dude, u r absolutely correct....This is a major concern for all the users of Dell 1320c Laser printer.....
however, we need to stick with basics :(

Possibilities

1) Faulty toners - but 3 of them (tried 2 toners in 1 printer) ?
2) Faulty PHD - but again - in 2 printers??
3) Faulty Printers?

Have removed all the yellow tabs that I can find and tried adjusting various settings both on teh printer and the software to no avail..

Only solution has been to ask people to try changing text to say blue but this is not ideal and getting very frustrating for all.............

take Care.

Try to reinstall the drivers, or run a maintence routine with the software that came with the printer. It should allow you to clean the heads. It is worth a try.

Error code 093-921

If you are seeing any or all of these error codes on the Dell 3130cn Laser Pinter that there is a Firmware Update to address this issue. However, the firmware cannot be applied when there is an error present, so first try reseating all toners. You may need to repeat this several times before errors are cleared. Once error-free, download the Firmware from the Dell Support website and apply.

Reset the Cyan toner properly.

I wish to replace the black toner cartridge in the Dell 3010cn. How do I gain access to it. There is easy access to the cyan cartridge at the moment

if you want to replace black one only you should follow these steps Install or replace the toner cartridge while the printer is on (if the power is not on, the cartridge carrier does not rotate).

1. After confirming the Insert Yellow Toner(Y) message, open the front door.

2. Hold the tape on the protective cover and pull it forward to remove the cover from each cartridge slot.

NOTE: You need to remove the protective cover only the first time that you install the toner.
NOTE: Dispose of the protective cover after you remove it.
NOTE: The protective cover is attached to each toner cartridge mount.

3. Make sure the color of the toner cartridge matches the slot on the toner cartridge carrier. The order is Y, M, C, K. Gently shake the cartridge to distribute the toner evenly.

4. Lift the tab up 90 degrees and pull the toner seal straight off, keeping it parallel with the toner cartridge.

5. To insert the toner cartridges, align the arrows on the cartridge with the corresponding arrows on the printer. Guide the cartridge in until it snaps into place and then push down the handhold to lock the cartridge in place.

6. Close the front door.

NOTE: Make sure the toner cartridge is installed correctly. Otherwise, the front door cannot close firmly.

7. The toner cartridge carrier rotates to the next empty slot. When the color of the newly inserted cartridge appears on the display, followed by the Insert message, insert the next toner cartridge.

8. Repeat steps 1 through 7 when inserting the remaining cartridges.

HOW DO I FIX THE ERROR 004-332...???

1. Reseat and clean the 4 toner cartridges and verify the orange plastic covers have been removed.
2. Reseat the toner cartridge carousel position. By doing the following:
Lift the handle of the first available toner cartridge or toner cartridge attempting to be installed and remove the toner cartridge.
Close the front cover. Power off the printer. Power on the printer.
An LCD message Insert <toner color> Toner appears. Open the front cover. To reinstall the toner cartridge, align the arrows on the cartridge with the corresponding arrows on the printer, guide the cartridge in until it snaps into place, and then push down the right lever to lock the cartridge in place. Close the front cover. The toner cartridge carousel rotates to the correct toner position.
3. Verify the developer rotor frame is not bent. If it is bent then the printer should be replaced, it would not be cost effective to replace the frame.
4. If it is not bent. Open the front door, try to rotate the carosel. It should NOT rotate. If the rotation is rigid and feels broken, then the printer should be replaced. If it rotates smoothly, the developer latch should be replaced. If the carosel does not rotate but still gives the error the rotor control board should be replaced.

How do i manually rotate cartridge carosel

You don't want to rotate the toner cartridges, you need to get a new Drum Cartridge assembly.
When you get that, it will have detailed directions, but you'll end up opening the top of the printer and pulling the drum straight up.

This is a different component than a toner cartridge. The toner carts are the supply of new toner. The drum cart collects excess toner during the printing process, and when it's full you need to get a new (empty) one.

If you connect to your printer's web interface it will have a link for "order supplies" that will take you right to the dell.com page for it.
Post a comment back if you need me to get the URL, and I'll grab it from my printer when I get home tonight.

Recently changed the black toner cartridge in the Dell 3110cn printer. This past week when I print the entire page is being printed with a shade of gray. I think the toner cartridge has leaked toner and...

This could be a drum problem, the drum is part of the toner cartridge in this printer.

If the toner has leaked it will be all over the inside of the printer - you'll see it. I don't think that's the problem.

If the toner cartridge is an original Dell item, then it's likely to be replacable under warranty.

If the cartridge is a remanufactured item, it may be that the wrong toner has been used. Toner is NOT all the same, and this cartridge is one whe the wrong toner really will not work properly for long.

The chances are the changing the toner cartidge will cure the problem, provided you use an original Dell item, or a remanufactured item from a reputable manufacturer.

A vertical line on laser copiers which are the same lenght apart on each indicates a dirty or defective toner cartridge or dirty or defective rollers. Take the cartridge out and wipe the rollers with a soft cloth. If the streaks continue then the rollers inside the cartridge or damaged. You will need to replace the toner cartridge.
