Dead on arrival!
Meade can fix these, but they must be shipped back to the factory.

You need to tighten the friction lock - it acts as a slip clutch.

The AZ worm gear is not engaging the gears. There is a spring next to the gear which applies pressure -- open up the base and see if the spring is loose or broken.
