I was afraid it would come to that - I assume I'll lose the data on both the c & d drives. Thanks - will try it tonight.

  • stushap Jan 12, 2009

Yeah, 95% - the system would crash even in safe mode, but then there is all the reinstallation of software (Office, Norton, Spysweeper, Wireless LAN software, Card Reader, etc...)& then al the updates. It will probably take me a couple of days to get it back.

Again THANKS for the help and advise!

Do you have the restore disk? I recommend formatting and completely reinstalling windows. This should help you. If you need further instructions, feel free to ask.

I hate to say it, but yes, you will loose all the data. I thought you backed it up though in safe mode?

You're very welcome. I do understand the frustration. I just had to re-format my work computer about a week or two ago,and it's STILL not back to normal.

If you go to this link it will walk you through the steps of being able to reprogram your boot manager. Its a software issue, not hardware. If you don't have access to the disk another possibility is that you can turn your computer on, while it is turning keep pushing down F8 button continually during start up. That should take you to the internal computer operating system, where you can select safe mode. When it opens you will be asked if you want to continue in safe mode or reboot computer to a date that worked you know of. It will restart it from that point, before you got a virus.
Hope either help, not sure if reboot way will work without a boot manager but worth a try. I've done it when I got infected with a virus on my dell laptop.

Welcome to Fixya

Looks like the Windows OS is already messed up. You should be able to boot the computer to safe mode to troubleshoot the issue. In your case, it is not booting up to safe mode then the only way to use your computer again is to restore it from the factory default state. If you want to do that, just turn off the computer then press the ONE KEY button located beside the power button then follow the on screen instructions.

Thank you for using Fixya!

Lenovo Y410, It does not boot. Throws error: There was problem in staring windows due to some error. How do I get to start windows in safe mode?

Welcome to FixYa

It seems that you are having problems booting to windows. There are a number of steps you can try to fix this issue.

1. boot to safe mode. Start tapping F8 right after the computer turns on. This would cause the system to boot to windows advanced boot menu. Once you see the advanced boot menu then just choose safe mode. If you managed to boot to safe mode then you can perform system restore from here. To run system restore just click on start, all programs, system tools, then click on system restore, once system restore has been launced choose a date when the computer was working fine

2. You can also try to boot to windows recovery environment. to do this keep tapping F8 right after the computer turns on. choose the option "repair my computer". The system would now boot to windows recovery environment. From here you can run startup repair and system restore

3. If none of the above steps work then you can use the One Key Recovery feature of a lenovo Y410. Please note that this would reset your computer to its factory image so this would cause you to LOSE DATA on the system. Before you use this feature make sure that you have a back up of all of you data. Note that the computer must be turned off. Press the NOVO button on the computer. refer to the image for its location on your computer

Pressing this button while the computer is off would launch the one key recovery of lenovo. From here you can restore the system to its factory condition.

Hope this helps

Will running the Last Known Good Configuration delete anything?
No, running the last known good configuration will restore your last good system settings and will not delete anything. The only thing you may have to reinstall programs you have recently installed because the configuration for those programs may have been lost.

Vistas explorer restarting

try booting into safe mode by turning on the laptop and keep on pressing F8. It should bring you into a menu. Choose safe mode. If you can get into safe mode then click on the windows icon in the bottom right hand corner and then in the search box, type in MSCONFIG. Click on msconfig when it pulls it up and when you go into that program then choose the startup tab and disable all.

This will stop all of your programs from starting up when you go into windows. Reboot the computer from this point and see what happens after you get back into windows. If this solves the problem then that means a program starting up is the problem.
