Question about Dryers

1 Answer

My maytag neptune dryer mdg3000aww will light, then go out. It will repeat but never stay lot longer than 5-10 seconds. I have checked continuity in the fuses, any other ideas?

Swap them coils out. When they get age they short out and quit.
Here is my home movie of how it works:

I bypassed the switch on top of the fire chamber (flame sensor?) ran and it ignites and stays lit. Of course it doesn't turn off but it gets gas and ignites. Even when it "is" hooked up it will still ignite but only stay lit for approximately 10 seconds. Could it be that sensor? I took it out, had my ohms meter showing continuity, held a lighter underneath it and it only took about 3 seconds for it to open. Could it be too weak and opening too soon triggering the coils to shut the gas off?

The sensor is probbaly bad worn out bimetal inside most likely. since the part is not that much swap it out and see if that fixes it is what I would do

Your first suggestion was correct, it was the coils. But I now have a new high limit thermostat as well... Thank you for the advice!

SOURCE: maytag neptune model mdg3000aww heats for 20 - 30

The most common failure item is the gas valve coil(s)

Warning! To avoid personal injury or even death, always disconnect your appliance from its power source--that is, unplug it or break the connection at the circuit breaker or fuse box--before you do any troubleshooting or repair work on your appliance. Also, because some components may have sharp edges, use caution while working on your appliance.
Below are some links provided by, www.repairclinic.com. This can assist you with diagnosis, parts ordering and replacement.

If your dryer doesn't heat, check these:

Igniter
Gas valve coils
Igniter Modern gas dryers use an electric igniter to ignite the gas from the gas valve. When it's working properly, the igniter glows bright orange. When it burns out, the dryer tumbles but there's no heat because the gas can't ignite. When the igniter burns out, you need to replace it. If the igniter is held by a tension bracket, you very well may need to replace the bracket too.

The igniter is inside the dryer housing, near the bottom front, usually in a cone-shaped metal tube (the force cone). It's about 2 inches long. It's mounted to the far end of the burner tube, and it has two wires attached to it--or to the tension bracket, if there is one.

Gas valve coils Watch the igniter. Does it glow bright orange, then shut off without igniting the gas? (When the gas ignites there's a large blue flame.) If so, there may be defective coils on the gas valve. Mounted on the top of modern gas valves, there are black electrical coils. The coils, when energized, open the gas valve. If one or more of the coils are defective, the valve doesn't open and the gas cannot ignite. Because it's often difficult to properly test the coils, it's usually best to replace both (all) of them at the same time.

The resistance is too weak in the hot surface ignitor to keep the gas valve open and requires replacement.

No dryer heat

If the coils are bad the unit will light with flame for 4 - 8 times then all of a sudden the ignitor will glow, kick off with no gas coming threw valve. it sounds like the high limit thermostat is short cycling the flame. This is the thermostat that sits on top of the burner chamber. remove 1 screw from the thermostat and blend it upwards away from the heat. Then plug unit back in and test to see if the flame stays on longer. Click here to see maytag dryer no heat posts. Contact me anytime here. Hope this helps..

Mdg3000aww gas dryer. drum turns. ignitor glows and goes off but no flame.

I suppose you made sure the gas is on. The valve probably has two valve coils sitting on top; one is a dual coil. My guess is that one coil is "open" (no continuity).

Neptune mdg3000aww starts heating and runs fine but stops heating shortly after start up can restart heater starts again and shuts down

If the machine keeps running but just not heating you have a thermostat issue. It could be the operating therm. or the high temp limit therm malfunctioning, shutting off the element.

If the machine stops running completely, check the door switch.

Neptune Intellidry dryer.

You need to do a continuity check on the dryer cord. Also manually reset the breakers and make sure you have power (both legs). After this and you still have trouble, do a continuity test on the door switch. The door switch will keep a dryer from operating. After that, you will need to check that your motor is being called to come on. Also check the capacitor and that it is reading the correct microfarad's with in 5%.

Check in the hole where the screen goes for blockage. Many times debries falls in there when removing screen. It cant make it out of the vent so it builds up and clogs the vent.

Maytag MDG3000AWW drum moving slowly

If the belt looks worn you should replace it. But it sounds like the idler pulley has gone out of position or possibly broken. The idler pulley adds tension to the belt and keeps it from spinning on the drum surface. Check the path of the belt on the bottom of the dryer. That is where the idler pulley is.
