WARNING: Before you start troubleshooting remember that you are dealing with electricity that can KILL. http://www.kitchentablecomputers.com/static.php - rules Only work inside the computer case when the power has been switched off and disconnected. Never open the power source. Some of the below steps recommend removing physical parts within the computer. While in the computer it is highly recommend that you be aware of ESD and its potential hazards Remove new hardware If any new HARDWARE has been recently added to the computer, remove that hardware to make sure it is not the cause of your issue. If after removing the new hardware your computer works it's likely the computer is either not compatible with the new hardware or a system setting needs to be changed to work with the new hardware device. Remove any disks or USB devices Remove any disks, CD's, DVD's that are in the computer and if any USB devices (Ipods, drives, phones, etc) are connected disconnect all of them as well. Reboot the computer and see if anything changes. Disconnect external devices. Remove everything from the back of the computer except the power cable. Turn on the computer and see if it beeps normally. If the computer has never beeped keep the monitor or display connected to see if any change occurs. Check all fans Make sure all fans are running in the computer. If a fan has failed (especially the heat sink fan for theCPU) your computer could be overheating or detecting the fan failure causing the computer not to boot. Check all cables Verify that all the cables are properly connected at that there are no loose cables by firmly pressing in each cable. All disk drives should have a data cable and power cable connected to them. Your power supply should have at least one cable going to the motherboard. Many motherboards may also have additional cables connected to them to supply power to the fans. Disconnect all expansion cards If the above recommendations still have not resolved the irregular POST, disconnect the riser board (if applicable) and each of theexpansion cards. If this resolves the issue or allows the computer to POST connect one card at a time until you determine what card is causing the issue. Disconnect all drives If you were unable to determine by the beep code what is failing or do not have a beep code disconnect theIDE, SATA ,SCSI or other data cables from the CD-ROM ,Hard Drive and Floppy Drive from the Motherboard. If this resolves your irregular POST or generates error messages re-connect each device until you determine what device or cable is causing the issue. In some situations it can also be a loose cable connection that causes the issue. Remove the RAM If you continue to to receive the same problem with all the above hardware removed, disconnect the RAM from the Motherboard and turn on the computer. If the computer has a different beep code or if your computer was not beeping and is now beeping turn off your computer and try the below suggestions. Making sure to turn off the computer each time you're adding and removing the memory and then turning the computer back on to see if the suggestion resolves the issue. Re-insert the memory into the same slot. If you have more than one stick of memory remove all but one stick of memory, try rotating through each stick. Try one stick of memory in each slot. If you're able to get the computer to boot with one or more of the sticks of memory it's likely you're dealing with some bad memory. Try to identify what stick of memory is bad and replace it. If you're able to get memory to work in one slot but not another slot. You're motherboard is defective you can either workaround the issue by running the memory in a different slot or replace the motherboard. Power cycle the computer In some situations a computer may have power related issues often caused by either the power supply or the motherboard. To help determine if this is the cause of your issue try turning the computer on, off, and back on as fast as possible, making sure the computer power light goes on and off each time. In some situations you may be able to temporarily get the computer to boot. This should only be used as a temporary workaround if you're able to get this to work. Often this is good for users who may have not done a backup and need to get the computer up one more time to copy files before starting to replace hardware. Disconnect and reconnect the CPU For users who are more comfortable working with the inside of their computer or who have built their computer one last recommendation before assuming hardware is bad is to reseat the CPU by removing it and putting it back into the computer. Bad motherboard, CPU, RAM, or power supply If after doing all of the above recommendations you continue to have the same issue unfortunately it is likely that you have badMotherboard, PSU, CPU, orRAM. The next step would be either to replace these components or have the computer serviced. If you plan on doing the repairs yourself or you are a repair shop it is suggested that you replace the Motherboard first, RAM, CPU, and then power supply in that order or try swappable parts from other computers. Hope this helps. b>

Hi,

Say, are you able to boot into safe mode? Also, what exactly happens when you try to boot normally. It simply gets stuck? Are there any error messages on the screen?

SOURCE: Problem installing OS

I think Partition Magic 8 screwed up the hard drive. I suggest, try a different hd, or if you don't have one, go to www.ebay.com and get like a 5 or 10GB hd and try that, cause if it works with a different hd, it proves that Partition Magic 8 screwed up the drive. Anything else, try a new IDE or SATA cable cause sometimes they go bad. try a different OS cd. Anything else I could say is bring it to a local computer store and see what they can do.

SOURCE: I have a problem with my Local Disk C .

It sounds like you formatted the Utility Partition of the HDD and loaded the OS to that partition. Check disk Management, see if you have both a C: and D: listed for hard drives. If you do, that is the likely answer.
If disk management shows only 1 HDD and a lot of unpartitioned space, then you made a disk partitioning error and will need to remove and repartition the drive then reinstall

SOURCE: Dell Latitude D410 - OS won't boot only after a few minutes

Seeing that both OS's (Windows XP and Ubuntu) are having a problem booting up, I also think the problem is with your HDD. I think you have a pretty good idea about computers from your use of terms :) There may be some corruption with the HDD. I would check that out first.
Good luck with your problem and thanks for using FixYa.com!!

Can I override the bios at startup so that it will recognize a new hard drive - for linux?

There should be no need to play around with your bios settings. Linux will install on a brand new hard drive as the sole operating system, or on an existing hard drive alongside Windows without any problem.

If you haven't already got a Linux distro, have a look at
http://www.ubuntu.com/download/desktop

Download whichever version of Ubuntu you prefer (LTS- the long term support version is recommended).

When the .iso file containing the operating system had downloaded, burn it onto a dvd, or install it on a usb drive.

Insert the dvd into the drive and restart or switch off/switch on the computer. The dvd will then kick in and offer you the choice of trying Ubuntu without installing, or a full install.

If you're using a new, empty hard drive just follow the on screen instructions and Ubuntu will install as the sole operating system.

If you already have Windows on your hard drive Ubuntu will give you the choice of either erasing Windows or installing Ubuntu alongside Windows. It's your choice.

Installing Ubuntu alongside Windows creates a dual boot hard drive. At start up you just choose which OS to use - Windows or Ubuntu. If creating this dual-boot system Ubuntu puts a (Linux) boot loader into the Windows OS so that Linux is recognised.

If you save the Ubuntu file to a usb drive you then have to change the bios settings so that your computer uses USB as the first boot device. Then restart your computer so that it boots in from your usb .. and Ubuntu will begin installing.

Whichever you use - dvd or usb - during the installation process Ubuntu will ask you how many GB of hard drive space it should use? You do not need to physically partition the hard drive. Linux will do it for you.

If it's a desktop PC you are using with Windows on the first hard drive and are fitting a second hard drive to install Linux on, or have installed Linux on the second hard drive .. and find that Linux doesn't appear at start up, it's because there's no Linux boot loader in Windows.

I quit using Windows many years ago.

Will a whole new windows 7 O.S. disk override or erase that horrible ubuntu system?

Once you start installing Windows 7 from your disc, you will be able to erase Ubuntu simultaneously. To know how it works, you can refer to the following link:

The following link can be helpful while installing Windows 7:

Dropped my HP D7 laptop. It slid out of my backpack from about 2 feet onto hardwood floor. On bootup, lights turn on for the keys and around the touchpad perimeter, and everything works fine with an HDMI...

You possibly cracked your screen or caused the ribbon cable to disconnect when you dropped it and just can't see what the error codes are saying. Is probably asking you if you'd like to start in safe mode with the beeps but you can't see it with a cracked screen or disconnected ribbon cable. Take it to a repair shop for a diagnosis.

How to down load ubuntu linux

Go to the Ubuntu download center
Ubuntu 13 04 Raring Ringtail
And download the 64 bit mac image that works on mac computers
http://releases.ubuntu.com/13.04/ubuntu-13.04-desktop-amd64+mac.iso
Burn it on a CD or on a USB using the instructions on this site
How to create bootable USB stick on OS X

Boot the computer using the image. On Windows based systems you can run a demo (a mock install) to verify compatibility with the hardware. If you are satisfied you may install it alongside Windows (dual boot), or alone. There should be something similar for macs (I know close to nothing on those machines).

"Boot Failed. P4-HL-DT-STDVDRAM GT30F"

How did you install Ubuntu? Using a Live CD I presume. If you were able to boot from the CD-Rom and run the Linux installation either as a demo or a physical installation then the CD-Rom drive is working. It should be able to boot from a Windows recovery CD and run the Windows installation program. There is no problem with the drivers because Ubuntu has its own drivers. Maybe the firmware of the Drive, but I doubt it. Since your hard drive is brand new (scrubbed) you have nothing to lose by physically installing Ubuntu and playing with it to verify the hardware and possibly to update the firmware of the CD-Rom drive. When choosing the Ubuntu distribution do not use one with a version number higher than 12.04 LTS. I could not install version 12.10 on an old tablet PC for some hardware reason: The Ubuntu part was not working but KDE was fine.
When installing Ubuntu install grub on the C: drive. It will be wiped anyway when you reinstall Windows.
Good Luck.

How do i run windows 7 and ubuntu side by side in VGN-NW240F?

Download ubuntu iso from www.ubuntu.com and burn to a cd or usb. You can choose either a 32-bit or 64-bit iso from the website and before choosing, check if your windows is 32 or 64-bit in "System" under "Control panel".
When you boot from the cd/ usb you will get to the install interface where you can choose to install ubuntu along windows. Then you can choose how big you want your ubuntu partition to be and that's it - the installer does the rest of the work. You can now choose between windows or ubuntu at every start up.

Installing ubuntu 8.1

You must have not deleted the partitions first. You need to do this in order for a fresh install of ubuntu.
