Question about Kitchen Ranges

Oven not working

I have a GE Spectra Electric range/oven, the lower heating element burned out resulting in sparking and smoke. I took the element out and wrapped the element wiring leads in electrical tape. When I tried to reset the breaker it keeps popping off. I unplugged the oven and was able to rest the breaker. Do I have to have a new element installed before the range will not trip the breaker and start working again? Is there a possible problem in the oven somewhere else? Why would the breaker not reset with the oven plugged in?

It is very likely that the element has failed internally and as such, the only cure is a new element.

I am going to replace the element but shouldn't the range still work ? Why won't the breaker reset with the oven plugged in?

SOURCE: FRIDGIDAIRE RANGE

It is most likely the pop came from a relay on the control board if the elements checked ok but not getting power to them. This is fairly common on fridgidaire ranges. Replace the oven control. Usually the control overlay is sold as a separate piece.

You need a new mother-board.

I had the same issue, it overheated my kitchen in a matter of minutes. If I didn't turn off the circuit-breaker, I probably would have had a fire - the heat being emitted was intense. The cost is running around $300. with tax and delivery. I'm not sure if I want to repair or purchase a new oven.

SOURCE: GE Electric Spectra Oven botton element will not heat

If only one element does not work, then test heating element continuity using a multimeter.
If oven does not bake or broil, then test temp probe.
If there is nothing wrong with elements and temp probe , then test wiring harness to control panel and timer control board.

SOURCE: oven does not work

Its 220 volts and ge only turns of one leg of the 220 vols so you always have a hot side NEVER work on any thing thats still pluged in.
You could have killed yourself if you touched graond while you pushe the hot conecter on to the burner. Try reseting your house bracker If that don't work Look a the relays and wiring in the stove.

Should we repair heat element, or buy a new oven?

It sounds like your element is electric. When food drips on that element it can cause a heat spot on the insulation around the electric element and eventually burns through. You can easily replace that element for about $50 - $60. It requires about three hand tools and 15 minutes to remove old one and install a new one. You should be in business for another 14 years if you clean any drippings on the element itself.

The coil in my oven caught on fire

You will need to replace the element, If it was just the lower bake element, it is a very easy repair, two screws and two wire connectors. UNPLUG the stove FIRST!!

Heating element in the oven appears to burn out, can it be repla

yes but be sure to turn the breaker off or unplug the stove cause the element has power on it on one side all the time and will short out when you take it out. you should see a screw on the plate that the element is attached to in the back of the oven that is how you get it out..

That doesn't appear to be a complete serial number. You can go to repairclinic.com and click on repair help, or go straight to this page: http://www.repairclinic.com/0089.asp?apptype=13
to find the correct serial number.

It is very common for elements to "catch fire" when they fail. It is really electical arching. But to answer your question you shouldnt be concerned if it ever happens to the bottom element immediatly kill the breaker it will stop instantly. dont use a fire extinguisher as it wont stop the arching. And most ovens do use the upper broil element for baking for very short intervals like 10secs on every minute or so to brown the top of product. Some models (especially older builder line ) do not
