Thanks. I will just have to replace the clutch assy. I will replace the coupler while I am in there.

  • boyd_cox Jan 14, 2009

OK, How do I get the agitator out? I removed the cap and found the bolt, but it just turns and will not come out.

  • boyd_cox Jan 14, 2009

Thanks. Got it out. Now I am having trouble getting the clutch retainer ring in.

Hello , this is the first sign of your clutch going out , it is not engaging on the last spin cycle soon it will almost never spin. the clutch is tough to get to and is not much money. you would have to be willing to pull the gear case to replace the clutch. a repair company would charge around 150.00-200.00 dollars total. Here is a different look at your problem follow the link I added , it is part # 5 as a kit.

That would be a good idea , they have an updated coupler with a metal inside that are good to use for a few dollars more. good luck.

If there is a spring under it it will feel like its just spinning but it is coming out just keep loosening it until the bolt comes out , then you should be able to grab the bottom of the agitator and pull up with only removing the bolt dont take the agitator apart.

Ge washer won't agitate

If the washer won't agitate at all, but the motor and belts are turning,
then you may have drive coupling or transmission issues. In this case, it
is well worthwhile to have a technician check the machine to verify this.
Sometimes, the base of your agitator can strip out, especially from
overloading. In such a case, the splines are damaged inside the agitator,
and can be seen after the agitator is removed.

If you can hear the motor running, and the water is moving a little bit, but not like normal where the clothes are being worked around you might just have worn out agitator dogs. This is a really easy 15 minute do it yourself fix, and the parts are less than $10 and widely available. This is normal. You can try a lower spin setting or smaller loads. The wrinkles will come out in your dryer.

If the motor has a transmission, it could be stuck in 1st gear. I think the agitator running is normal.

Agitation issues. Everything else appears/works normally.

I just encountered the same problem. I think the operation of the machine is such that the motor turns one direction for the spin cycle, and the other direction for the agitate cycle. I am replacing my motor, as I think i have a bad winding on the reverse. I will let you know.

Opening door while spining should stop the machine. Since no water comes in, the agitate stage will not work even when the timer will be on this spot. Check first the filters on the inlet water line (both sides). Then, if problem still exist - check that the inlet water valve works(it is an electromagnet valve, located at the pipe's entrance to the machine)). If it doesn't work, test that it get power. In case it get power and doesn't work - You can easily open the valve and clean it (from scale or other dirt). Be aware you should disconnect the power cable from machine before doing it !!!! Check as well for valve's coil resistance. In case you have no resistance measurement - you should replace it for a new one. Good luck !

Agitator not turning during cycle

Well, it sounds like you've done your homework. My first suspect would have been the agitator dogs too, but you said they were fine. Another likely suspect would have been the motor coupler, but you said the washer spins during the spin cycle. If the coupler was bad the unit would fill, but wouldn't agitate or spin. Plus, it would make an awful noise. I would have also suspected a clutch assembly, but you said the wash tub can spin. Normally, when the clutch goes bad, the drum won't spin, or spins slow. Another suspect could have been a bad lid switch, but the washer would have filled and stopped, without agitating or spinning. The only remaining suspect that I'm aware of is the gear case (transmission). Checking under the washer can give you some clues. Normally, when a gear case starts to go bad, they leak an amber colored oil. You may find puddles or drips under the washer. If you see no signs of oil the gear case could still be defective, however. But, before you go through all the trouble, double check the agitator one more time. Completely remove it from the tub and check the under side to ensure the grooves that grip the top of the gear case shaft have not been worn smooth. I hope this may have been some help to you.
