Question about Cuisinart EM-200 Espresso Machine

2 Answers

Half of the time, espresso leaks (or sprays) out of multiple points on the handle/portafilter, instead of coming out of the two designated holes. Almost as if too much pressure builds so it gets forced out of the top as well. I thought perhaps I was tamping too hard or over filling, but it does the same thing with the Illy espresso pods.

Thanks Mp3 Doc; I tried running just water through the machine, and I DID NOT get the same results. The water poured out nicely from the two holes. Thoughts?

It sounds to me that your group seal is bad. Since this machine is a 15-Bar unit, it puts out quite a bit of pressure causing water to leak out around the portafilter when making espresso if your seal is old or damaged. The pressure doesn't build up as much when you are running just water through the machine - hence the reason why the machine works ok without grounds. I sell a LOT of parts and accessories for various manufacturers of espresso machines. This particular seal is extremely difficult to locate fom Cuisinart, but is rather easy to replace. Through extensive testing, I have located a replacement gasket produced by another major manufacturer that fits the Cuisinart EM-100 & EM-200 machines perfectly. I sell them for $10.99 each (or two for $19.99) which includes shipping in the continental US and I accept Paypal. If you would like to contact me via email (cowboy_romeo@yahoo.com), I will be happy to help you out.

Try running water only and see if you get the same result. If you do, then soak the filters and the bottom of the metal basket of the portafilter holder in vinegar (distilled white). In my experience, this unit requires constant cleaning. But the espresso is good.

I am having the same problem. I've tried different tamping and different grinds of espresso without any change. I wish I could figure it out.

Why won't my portafilter stay engaged once the water starts dripping? It flies off and sprays coffee grounds, and this started last week. Stays in place only if I wrestle with the filter handle.

It is possible that the grind you are using is too fine and causing so much back pressure that the portafilter is moving, also possible that the group gasket installed need to be replaced, I have also seen this happen with damaged screens.

We have broken the handle on pressurized portafilter for Saeco Via Venezia espresso machine. where can we get replacement?

I don't think the handle is sold separately. Seattlecoffeegear does sells both a bottomless and an unpressurised portafilter for the Via Venezia. Both would be considered upgraded gear vs the pressurized one.

I have a solis crema sl-70 whose portafilter leaks and actually flies off if I don't hold it in place as I pull a shot. Is this is small repair problem, or should I replace my machine?

You may just need a new grouphead gasket. This is a rubber ring that fits in the space between the outside of the grouphead and the interior area that houses the dispersion screen. If it's worn or dried out, the pf may not be sealing properly (which would cause the leaking and instability)
The portafilter (pf) handle should line up with a pre-printed indicator line on the group head when it's "locked" in. If you're looking at the machine straight on, and the far side is "12" on a clock face, the handle should be at 6 or 5 o' clock. The pf should "ease" in to the grouphead, not stop with a hard feeling.
The problem might be with the portafilter "ears", or the metal tines that wedge into the grouphead. If they're excessively worn, the pf might not be secured snugly enough to make a seal. A new pf will solve this.
So, first, try a new gasket. Then a new portafilter. Then a new machine :)

Water sprays out between portafilter and brewhead.

I had the same problem when I started using the Sirena. When I put the portafilter on I was lining it up with the arrow. I found that if I tighten the portafilter on all the way to the right (past the arrow) it works perfect, no water spraying.

Espresso sprays and sputters

How long does it take to fill the cup?
Sounds more like too coarsely ground espresso to me. Should take about 25 seconds for 30 ml of espresso to come out ... that is normally more like a 'trickle'. If yours comes much faster, you might try grinding it finer and/or tamping more firmly.

Best regards,
Andy
