SOURCE: ideal classic boiler no heating only hot water

Hi I have some boiler problems, I`m the proud owner of an Ideal classic SE12ff. The controls are that of Sunvic select Xl.
The problem is I can only get the hot water to work when the heating is on, I neglected this over the winter but now the summer is apparently fast approaching I am desperatley trying to get this solved. A plumber has done some fault finding with no prevail, have you any suggestions?

New Vaillant 360 eco plus boiler, takes almost 3/4s an hour for rads to come up to a decent temp. Hot water is fine. Called out install Engineer who is an excellent tradesman but he says everything

We have just had our old system boiler replaced with a vaillant ecotec plus 837 and sounds like a similar working operation to ours. At first I was a little concerned, but I was told by our installer that he was told by vaillant that these very latest boilers size the system on start up for about 10 mins, then take temperature to target flow which you set boiler at. So even by setting target flow temperature very high you still get the initial sizing cycle, which ours was about 30-35c temp. These boilers seem to run biased for efficiency as after a while they modulate the boiler burner down and the radiators run more on the side of warm than really hot like the old type boilers. You also get better efficiency as at lower temperature the boiler condenses better. You will also find you get a more constant temperature in your home rather than over shoots. I was concerned at first, shame there was no info/explanation in user manual as people do need to know that this is normal operation. We are used to ours now, took a month and by the way these boilers can make a creaking noise but was told this normal expansion/ contraction but annoying when sited in bedroom cupboard. Best of luck!

I have a Vaillant Combi boiler, (not sure of make, but its 10 years old),the hot water works fine and the bolier heats up the downstairs rads fine, but the upstairs ones have all gone off...have bleed them...

lost pressure raise pressure up 2 bar and bleed the rads keep topping up untill all air has gone from rads do this with the pump off, turn all your rads back on and follow what in said .

I can only get heating to the radiators upstairs, not downstairs

balance the rads.
upstair radiators turn all valves off, heat will then divert downstairs, open valves upstairs 4 turns on locksheilds and number 4 on trvs if u have any.
then if that does not work get a combi or powerflush.
if u cant afford then drain a little from rads, get x300 sludge remover from plumb shop and put in header tank(not hot water tank).
then fill system up and repeat balancing.

3 out of 7 rads working with hot water

This is a flow problem within the system and you have ruled out the two major problems already.
asuming the pump has been fitted in the correct way round and the pump isolation valves are open fully. have you tried closing down the radiator valves upstairs and forcing the flow around the downstairs circuit? also is there any zone valves on the circuit not opening.
Is it a conventional type system with a header tank ?

Baxi Boiler not firing, pilot light ok

first check the pilot is alight, it sounds like it is cause you can hear the boiler click. that click is the gas vale solenoid trying to open, if there is 240-230volts at gas valve when you here the click and pilot is alight the gas valve is broken. if you test for voltage look on the gas valve and see if its 240 or 24v obviously if it 24 v check for 24 volts, let me know

Boiler overheating

the problem there a relay stuck or thermostat bring on the pump & you can lower your high limit aquastat!! also the flow valves can bypass hot hot water risers time to put in a seperate water heater domestic coil are not energy efficient !!!! aquastat high limit set @ 180f deg low limit set @ 140f deg!!!
good luck!!! tim

My oil fired central heating system has stopped heating up stairs. The rads and pipes have been flushed out, when the system was refilled the upstairs rads heated ok untill the system was switched off for...

Since you have done a good job bleeding the system, I will suggest that the impeller on the pump is bad. Many times these will simply deteriorate in the volute causing the symptoms that you describe.
