Question about Televison & Video
I bought a Magic Mike blu ray from amazon.ca but it had a bunch of little freezes throughout the first hour of the movie, which was nothing major. but then about 1 hr 4mins in it skipped about 15 seconds and then there was no sound for the rest of the movie. the only way i could get the sound back was to rewind the movie to before the part where it skipped. (whats even weirder is most of the time it skipped and the sound didnt work, but there were a few times when it worked fine.) so i sent the DVD back to amazon and got a replacement DVD. but that one did the exact same thing. i thought it was a weird coincidence so i sent that one back too. i then bought one from Future Shop and sadly, that one also does the exact same thing. this is sooo frustrating. why would 3 DVDs all be doing this? my blu ray player works 100% perfectly too so it cant be that. i feel like im not getting my money's worth but im sick of buying a new blu ray & them all happening to do the same thing. i wonder if anyone else is experiencing this with their blu rays. seems too crazy to just be a coincidence. any help would be great Thanks, Jessie

This is a common problem on CD and DVD players.
Altini is correct to a point. You can try taking the top case off, removing the DVD drive and taking the top off of the drive. Then use a q-tip on the laser lense. I use a little squirt of windex on the q-tip. Gently clean the lense even if it doesn't look dirty. Make sure you very gently work the lense up and down through it's travel. This will make sure no dust or dirt is interfering with the lense focusing.
Reassemble and try your movies again. This is a 50 50 proposition. If you still have the same problem, the mechanism has likely gone bad. Time for a new DVD player.

Try running a dvd cleaner through it first, before trying anything else (the type that looks like a DVD with a brush underneath).
The regular DVD might have been a fluke (scratches, rental?, burned dvd?)
Was there anything special about the new Blu-Ray Disc - what was the tile? On certain titles, you may need the firmware upgrade found at:

SOURCE: Black Bars on all blu ray movies
Having black bars displayed when watching a Blu-Ray disc is a common occurrence, even with a widescreen television.
You may have heard or seen aspect ratios of 4:3 or 16:9. 4:3 is the ratio of a traditional television that is nearly square. 16:9 is the ratio of most widescreen televisions currently marketed. The reason that even with a 16:9 television Blu-Ray discs are displaying black bars is that many of these discs contain footage that has not been reformatted for television. The screen in a movie theater is even wider than 16:9, and rather than trim the ends, most Blu-Ray discs maintain the entire picture.
Depending on the options available in your particular television, you may be able to find a zoom setting that trims the ends and removes the black bars. It is up to you if you would rather see black bars with the entire picture or lose a small amount of the picture on each side for a full-screen experience.
Hope this helps,

I had the same problem - Fix - Go to the sharp web site and download the file HP21U_HP50U_PN902270. You will need to make sure your thumb drive is no bigger than 4gb and you do not have any other files on it. Once you download the file on the thumb drive, you will need to unzip the file on the same thumb drive. The zip file is one of the new ones, so you might need to go to the web and get a shareware program that will open it. After this - turn your player on and go to setting, next scroll down to update firmware, insert the drive and tell it OK, it will ask you if this is OK, tell it OK and it will upgrade the firmware in about 2 min. I have already done this with 3 other players with no problem. Good luck. The sharp web site is sometimes a little hard to find and to me was not the most user friendly. good luck Pruitt43@yahoo.com

My guess is that the player may need to be cleaned, there is a cleaning kit that can be purchased at an electronics specialty store or retailer such as Wal Mart, if the kit does not correct the problem then you should have the unit checked and repaired or replaced - the unit may be defective. Good luck to you!
