Hello radio,
Welcome to FixYa. My name is John, and I will be assisting you with your issue today.
Hope you replaced the diode in the right direction! There a few capacitors in that area
you need to check, but first, turn the unit Over and check that there are no burned
Trace in that area, if so, repair it. Check that the in-line fuse is good also. Hope this
was helpful to you and your Comments and Testimony's are always welcome here.
Thanks for choosing FixYa today and the future.

Like Benimur said, most all newer units have a protection diode that is there for the purpose of protecting the radio when the power cord is pluged in backwards. It doesn't take much to fix them, only a $.02 diode. Most cb shops only charge between $10 to $15 to repair them.

What is the main function of a reverse polarity diode, what would happen if it was blown

Hi,
a diode in reverse polarity could be used e.g. for protecting some circuit against improper polarity of supply. It could be connected in serial - but it is in forward polarity - (disadvantage: voltage drop) or in parallel - reverse polarity - with a fuse in serial to supply. This way is often used with Zener diode - protection against overvoltage in addition. Try to google e.g. "how to protect against improper polarity". For this type of protection could be used special types od diodes - transils - they could be one- or bidirectional. In case of a diode failure, the supplied circuit may not work - it depends on the way of diode connection and type of its failure - short circuit or disconnection. But there is many diode application: try https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diode https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diode#Applications

I hooked up the power on my corba 29 ltd by and I think I blew something inside. Is this an easy fix?

The Cobra 29, like most CB radios, contains a reverse-polarity diode whose purpose it is to protect the radio against accidental reverse-polarity hookups. Normally all you will need to do is replace the fuse, then hook the radio up correctly.

If that doesn't get you going, then possibly the polarity-protection diode is now shorted and will have to be replaced (or removed - not recommended).

Beyond that, my experience is that the next component most like to get damaged is the Audio Output circuit, either an IC or a power transistor (larger than a regular transistor). At this point you're going to have to take it to a repair shop.

Would like a circuit diagram for dell inspiron 1000 power circuit

There is a reverse polarity diode that prob popped. It doesn't allow the power to even reach the battery anymore. It'll prob charge in another laptop that takes that battery. The diode is on the mother board.

Reverse polarity hook up blew fuse link. Where can i get the correct fuse link to solder into the stanley inverter pc809 800watt?

Hmmmmm, well that`s unfortunate , i can tell you that most electronic devices that connect to low voltage DC supply's are protected bye a protection diode and the fuse link you think it might be is a circuit trace internal.
an 800 watt innverter draws about 80 to 100 amp to produce the 800 watt output and you must have 2 40 amp fuses or 3 30 amp fuses customer replaceable, if you did not damage the components in your device all you kneed to do is to repair the circuit trace and replace the reverse polarity protection diode to restore normal operation

there are no fuse links internal to inverter power supply's

What voltage is needed to power the Scan Do Pro II? Everyone I've found on the Internet works on AC power. We have two units we can't find the DC wall transformers for. We need to know what voltage...

I have a ScanDo 1273, pretty similar. It takes 12v DC, positive center. It took me some testing to figure this out... From what I saw inside it, it looks like anything 12v or less isn't going to break anything and it has diodes to protect for reverse polarity.

How can I operate my LG 26LE5300 LED LCD TV in my motorhome the most direct way possible (i.e....without an inverter)? This low power (40-50 watts) TV has an external brick to convert 120 AC to it's...

1) You need to look at the output current rating (AMP) of this AC to 24dc adapter, this 24vdc adapter is a regulated switching power supply that will maintain 24vdc output up the maximum current rating and also has shutdown circuits if the over current draw is detect and also if the output voltage goes up beyond 24vdc to protect the load (TV).

2) To use 12vdc to 24vdc DC-DC booster, it should have the following spec:

A) The output current rating should be at least 20% higher than the load requires to give its head room.
B) It must have regulated output that will maintain the 24vdc when the input (12vdc) will vary from 10vdc ~16vdc or higher since your batteries will not maintain exact 12vdc all the time.
C) It must have good protection circuits that will protect it self from reverse polarity connections, shorted output protection, over voltage output protection.
D) It should provide AC ripple spec on the 24vdc output, it should be in the milli-volt range (you will always get AC ripple riding on top of DC when you rectify the AC into DC).

These are the minimum requirement for your DC to DC booster, which you need to protect your TV and your motor home from burning down.
I hope I explain it OK to you.

I replaced the battery but put it in backwards now the car wont go into gear and the esc and abs lights are on.

Some items/assemblies can be protected against incorrect polarity, others cannot. The extent of damage could be pretty bad; among the things that may be impacted:
- Alternator- These use diodes to make DC from the AC voltage it produces and applying reversed polarity to it will fry it internally. - Any device using 12V DC and employing solid state components; this includes: the main computer, the ABS computer if separate, braking computer if separate, stereo system and some types of sensors.
Restoring your car is likely to be very costly. You have my sympathy.

Lost power supply

It usually wont hurt if the polarity is not right. Most electronic device have a diode to protect it from reverse polarity. Make sure that it needs 12V. If you put higher voltage than what it needs that is what will damage it.

Green Light / Dead Tomtom - Please help with component id

that diode is a reverse polarity protection diode. An 1N414 will do ( available for very very little from almost ALL electronic component suppliers.) If there is NOTHING ELSE WRONG then the tomtom will still work without this diode. Its not needed in normal operation anyway. All it does is cause the fuse to blow in the cigarette lighter plug if the polarity is accidently reversed. Therefore , with a correct supply , it does nothing !

Crossed polarity to Panasonic AG-455

Nick,

If you did not damage the dc converter in the camera, you can check several micro fuses located on the regulator board. There are several diodes that assist in blocking reverse polarity applied to the camera. These diodes intentionally open these fuseable devices to protect the power supply and camera.
Hope this helps you,
