SOURCE: Dell Optiplex gx280 shuts down and orange power light blinks

It happens because the power supply is overheats and computer goes to standby. The power supply is 160w or lower. Specially it will happen if you put more devices in such as video card or sound card. So the only solution you have is to place a small 1or2 fans toward the power supply to make it cooler. And 1 more thing the power for the fans should come from other sources.

SOURCE: dell dimension 8400 fan runs at high speed upon power on

Check if the capasitors on the motherboard are "swollen" which would mean the motheroard is KAPUT. Check if there is a modem in the PCI slots which often shorts the motherboard (when it has become faulty) ... remove the modem. Try booting again. If not succesfull make sure the POWER SUPPLY workls correctly by replacing it with another working one..... If no joy... there are still one or two other options. Let me know If you still have a problem and I will give you more options to check on

My cpu fan speed is countinuely high guide me how to low the fan speed

The speed is determined by a cause ..and to make it worked like It used to , you have to eliminate the cause...It probably has a dirty heat dispenser ..and the cleaning will make it run smooth again ...but also check the bios settings for the fan ..For dell there are available more than one modes..and you can go to bios and see which way is set ..Select the quiet mode and save changes on exit

When i turn the pc on it seems like it is over running or winding out

The winding noise can be caused due to three components on the computer. The power supply fan, the Processor fan or the harddrive.

You run the built in diganostics to isolate if the fans are making the noise.
1. Restart your computer
2. Tap on the F12 key a couple of times when you see the Dell logo screen
3. High light boot to utlity partision using your down arrow key
4. Hit enter and select diagnostics
5. In the diagnostics menu select customer test and run the test on the fan.

If the test pass you need physically check , opening the chassis and which fan is making the noise and replace the same.

Thanks for using Fixya

Dell OptiPlex GX620 starts up then shuts down repeatedly

Try this: remove the DMOS battery and unplug the on/off switch plug. It's the one in the corner near the power supply. To be sure follow the cable from the front on/off switch board on back to this plug. Then plug the A/C cord in, if the system boots up fine, then replace the front panel power on/off swith board. Naturally you will not be able to power off the computer using the power switch (since we unplugged it), so you will have to just pull the plug. Hope this helps. Joe

Dell Optiplex GX280 boot problem

I just repaired two Gateway systems with similar behavior (turn on power, fan runs at full speed, no boot), and both needed replacement system boards. (These were a different model, but the symptoms are typical of a dead system board.) I got the boards from a company called Blue Raven Technology (

Before deciding the main board is bad, try another power supply to make sure that's not the problem. Also you might try clearing the CMOS memory on the system board (either by moving a jumper usually found near the backup battery, or by removing the battery itself). Sometimes corrupted CMOS data will keep the system from booting.
