My Acer Aspire 5000 is overheating and the fan speed up but shuts down after a period of time. Acer told me to bring it to a repair shop as it is not anymore on guarantee. I wonder if it is an hardware or software / system issue. It overheats when I download music with I-Tunes software or when using Firefox on some internet sites.

If you put your hand up to the exhaust port of the fan you should feel a lot of air blowing, if not you need to clean off the part of the heatsink that the fan blows into, its blocked by dust.

You may just need a power supply.
Some small computer stores will check it for you on the spot at no cost.

Acer extensa laptop is working only fan not work please give asolutions

First you can try duster spray for electronics to blow out any dust in the vents of laptops. If this doesn't help - there is laptop fans - portable that you put under the laptop itself to help with ventilation problems. If this doesn't help then watch a video on how to take apart your laptop - simple steps, un screw the back and take off cover, once done locate fan and use duster to blow out dust. Screw everything back together and turn on laptop. If this doesn't fix your problem and fan still doesn't work, then you may need a new fan = take this to a professional pc repair shop where they can replace it for you. I recommend MicroCenter (which is a all pc repair shop) stores located everywhere. look it up (

My acer aspire 5738 overheating and shutdown while playing games

must dissassemble and clean lint out of fan area, inspect carefully and making certain all passages are clear., I use cutips, alcohol and toothbrush, paintbrushes, fans can usually be taken out by removing the little screws but only once dissassembly is done.
youtube can explain how! take pics for reassembly and go slow and be organised and careful.
also inspect motherboard for water damages and ribbon cables that go back in and tear the gold strips and short things out if not done slowly and precisely.
Look on kijiji or backpage for local repair shops and guys with a good reputation. Google can find you these places but watch out for local scammers.
If you have to get that far it would be a good idea to put some heat sink paste (arctic silver being the best and can be found for 5 to 10 bucks for a shringe like tube of it. use it sparingly and get the old stuff off with alcohol.
be careful if using brushes around water damage parts as they may be near from lifting off the board so be gentle as that repair is near impossible to fix and I say near impossible but I did it (once).
Hope this helps but there is a reason you pay for the repair guy.
Knowledge Rules! East Coast Canada Rocks!!
Take care
There also could be processes running in the background of your computer making it slowdown and work the cpu and memory hard.
Get a process remover and get rid of all those toolbars and other software that gets installed everytime you surf and download.
Don't remove Windows processes or programs,
Read and study before doing it.
hope this helps

My cooling fan has shut off and the computer is telling me that there is an error but I don't know how to fix it

If the internal fan is not working you will need to disassemble and replace it. Could be that some object has lodged in the fan causing it to not spin. If you do not know how to disassemble you may want to have a repair shop look at it.

How can i tell if the fan on my vaio CS31S isnt working properly? It seems to speed up and down and the laptop shuts down? Is it te fan or could there be another reason for this shutdown? :-)

Try blowing out any dust from around the fan with compressed air. If the fan is turning on and off a lot, this could be normal, depending on your processor, but if the system just shuts down fully and randomly, it would be a heat issue. The CPU is overheating and the failsafe mechanism is to instantly shut your computer down. The only way to avoid this is to raise the CPU shutdown temp in the BIOS settings, or if you can access the CPU, remove it and apply new, quality thermal grease. Also, ensure the fan is operating correctly during use and dont block any air intake or exhaust ports.

Sounds to me like you could have a couple of possible problems.

First and most importantly would be to make sure that your cpu fan is clean and running. This is the fan that is located on the large heat sink on the mother board. A lot of times, especially on older systems, this fan and heatsink will get covered with dust and almost always cause an overtemp fault. Usually blowing this out with electronics cleaner will rectify this but if it has been like that for a while you may need to replace the cpu fan. Most electronics stores will sell these fairly cheap.

Your other problem may be that you need to purchase another case fan to cool the cpu more effectively. Generally though most premade systems come with enough fans.

Also you may need a new fan for the one that he replaced. It sounds to me like you may have a bad connector either on the replacement fan or the power supply wire. A real easy way to tell is to wiggle the wires a little bit. If your fan speed fluctuates odds are you've got a loose connection. It can appear to be fine but sometimes those wires on the molex connectors come loose and make don't make good contact. When that happens it may work fine for a few minutes, but then the first time that you get vibrations it stops working.

I've had a bad dust problem and my cpu fan began making a loud whirring noise and finally the computer shut down altogether. Took the cover off totally cleaned out the dust and turned the power back on....

If the computer detects overheating or fan failure it will shut down automatically. If you replace the fan you should be fine. Remove your old fan and try to get one that connects the same way, some of them connect directly to the heat sink, others to the motherboard.

Fan starts runnung fast and everything is frozen

Overheating. Try using canned air and blowing out vents. If you are comfortable with it, take the laptop apart and clean it out. If not, contact a local computer shop that can do it for you. If cleaning doesn't do it, the CPU heatsink will need reseated or the CPU will need replaced.
