Question about Western Digital My Passport Essential 500GB External USB 20 Portable Red 500 GB Hard Drive
Was working fine last night. Both this external driver (1) and another hard drive formated for a MAC (2) were plugged into my computer at the same time. I had copied some audio files from 2 to 1. Shut the computer down. When restarting the next day My passport will not read in "My Computer" freezing Windows Navigator (i think thats what it said) I've uninstalled, re-installed will little success. At one point it would allow me to see and open the drive, I attempted to remove the files, after removing files (which took hours for just a couple MB) It froze again. I restarted and now I'm back at square one. re-installing does nothing.

Best thing about this new service is that you are never placed on hold and get to talk to real repairmen in the US.
the service is completely free and covers almost anything you can think of.(from cars to computers, handyman, and even drones)
click here to download the app (for users in the US for now) and get all the help you need.

Unfortunately, you have probably lost all the files on the drive. It may be possible to take it to a PC Repair shop and have them run specialist software on it, although the clicking sound indicates a hardware failure, rather than software. You have my deepest apologies, but this does happen... although rarely.

try to right on my computer and click on Manage
then click on Disk Management
Observe if you are able to see Drive 0 <- which is your internal drive in your computer.
Observer also if you are able to see Drive 1 <- this will indicate that the system recognise that an external USB drive was attached to it.
Right click on the area right next to the box that says Hard Drive 1 and see if you can find the wordings "Change Drive Letters and Paths".
If you manage to go that far, click on any of your preferred drive letters, for example Z: and then click OK. And then go to Windows Explorer or My Computer and see if Z: existed there.

SOURCE: I have a new WD
> I have a new ... external hard-drive
If it is less than TWELVE MONTHS old, then its WARRANTY is still valid.
EXERCISE the warranty to get it repaired/replaced at _minimal_ cost to you.

A Windows PC computer will not read files on the WD hard drive that has been formatted on a MAC.
Copy your photos onto the MAC computer then remove the WD hard drive and connect it to your Windows PC and format the WD hard drive in FAT32 file system.
After formatting has been completed remove the WD hard disk and connect it to the MAC computer. The MAC can read and write to a Windows FAT32 formated hard disk. You can now copy the photos from the MAC to the WD hard disk. When copying is complete, remove the WD hard drive and connect the WD hard drive to your Windows PC and you can now copy the photo from the WD hard disk to your Windows PC.
