Gateway mx3414 startup problem

When i hit the power button I hear the HD engage, and the fan turn on, but the screen is blank black. Though it does sound much quieter on startup than it used to. Does anyone know what would be the cause of this?

    i have not changed monitors.

it was awhile ago, but I was on my computer, and it froze. It was not the typical BSOD error i normally get when it freezes.(though i had seen this freeze screen once or twice before) but (kinda hard to describe) it was a strange pattern. wtih white, gray, red, green. Its almost impossible to describe.

BUt after i had to manually turn it off, when i started it back up is when the black screen problem started.

yes. I had already tried hooking it up to another monitor. No luck there. I assumed it would be something serious, and have made an appointment to get it checked out.

I would not mind getting a new computer anyway, this laptop has caused nothin but problems

can you hook the computer up to a different monitor and see what happens? It sounds like your display may have gone out. Since it is a notebook im not sure if the graphics are expandable. If you hook up another monitor and you still have no display than you are looking at something serious. You say you had the bsod show up a couple times? May also be the mem. or cpu. If it is hardware related and the computer is no longer under warranty you might be best off buying a new machine.

Make sure no buttons on your monitor were changed.I had a pc monitor where all it was the grandchild had changed the settings on the monitor

If you dont mind formatting you can put your windows or recovery cd in and boot from cd.If it allows you to boot I would continue with the new installation.
If not you may be better off buying a new laptop.

If you are not getting any display on any monitors it leads me to believe the display did in fact go bad. This happens with electronics and probably nothin you could have done but when you take it to your appointment make sure they get any info you need off the computer and put it on a cd or flash drive for you. Sorry I didn't have better news for you but now at least you get to go shopping for a new machine. :)

There is a lot of mumbo jumbo when it comes to computers and that is why most of us that work on them have a "different personality" I'm glad you did get the issue resolved even though there was nothing i could help you with. If you have any questions about your new system you know where to look. Good luck

My mx3414 gateway went dead

There is a 15 pin VGA connector on that model so plug it in to an external monitor or an LCD television and see if you have video or not. If you do, then you need to check the LCD power inverter which converts the AC power from the wall to DC power. Since you had a power surge this would be the most likely trouble spot. If there is no video, the likely culprit is the video card.

I have a Gateway MX3414 that the screen just went BLACK and we tried connecting an external monitor there was nothing on that monitor also! What else could be wrong - Anyone know? I have no problem...

I am assuming that the laptop runs without a problem otherwise, IE. even though there is no visual display, it boots, lights light up, beeps when it should, fans come on, etc. If all of that is correct, the culpret would be the video card. Unfortunately with laptops, they are a part of the motherboard, and you would have to order another motherboard and swap them out. For most people I would advise against it, but it sounds like you may have what it takes!
Good luck,
James.

you may have hit the sleep or standby button. Try turning the pc off by holding down the power button untill you hear the fans stop. then power up as usual.

Laptop Shuts down to black screen without warning.

it may be over heating !!
turn it on and run it till you hear the fan turn on, then check if there is much air coming out of it.
if not use a vacuum to **** air throw it as you blow hard into the slot that the air should come out of

Gateway laptop mx3414-black screen cannot load windows

Try going into safe mode upon startup by hitting the F8 button. If it does then hit safe mode to get into your computer. Go to start>accessories>system tools>system restore. Follow the wizard to restore your computer to a date earlier than when you started having problems. Let me know if you have any problems or questions.

Blank screen

Quite possible that the machine is defaulting to external display only. Check your BIOS for this and try any function keys/switches that are available.

Power is on but I have a blank screen

Sounds like the hard drive crashed. Make sure the hard drive is seated back in properly, then hit the power button and listen closely. You should be able to hear it spin when the hard drive engages. If it does engage, you should hear it spin smoothly, if there are any clicking or dull thumking sounds, then it's shot and needs replacing.
