1, Check if your cd-rom is reading properly, You can do that by connecting the cd-rom to another computer
2. Hope it's the first point because if not, than it's not the cd-rom the problem but the main comptroller on the motherboard. If this is the case then the only alternative is replacing the motherboard.

HOW I START TO INSTALL A CD IN COMPUTER

well, just insert your CD. then reboot(RESTART) your PC. it will ask that boot from CD press any key..
So you press any key then set up will be loading. and follow as per the instruction.. it is very easy.
IF "boot from CD" does not appear then while restarting press F10 or DELETE button ans select DC ROM as a first boot device. that's all.

Just bought a laptop cheap as on trade me for extra battery was told that it was broken but fired it up and works but is asking me for a user name and password to log on to windows. can i over ride it or...

keep the laptop, hope it got a working cd-rom/dvd-drive !(if not, take-out /replace the harddisk)
-win xp has to be removed from harddisk,
the hd must be formatted so you got a blank hd to set up your new system

you'll need :
- antoher PC with internet connection and cd/dvd-burner
- a win98 installation cd or bootable savecopy of it,
- a new win-xp install cd plus cd-key
- a program called PC Wizard(download)
and a bit of time...(one night or two:-)

follow instructions:

if you can enter bios (press F1 or F2 or Del)
during booting), youre lucky...

enter bios while booting, in the menu look for boot otions or devices, change order of boot devices, so that cd/dvd-drive is 1st, then save and exit (F10)
insert win98-CD, boot from cd, try to setup win98, you'll be asked to erase/ format all data/installations/partitions
on the harddisk (drive c:,probably), do so, format the drive using the FAT32-file system,
then end installation without fully setting up win 98.
now you should have a blank disk witout any operation system on it.

now put in win xp cd, go through the whole installation process
install and run pc wizard(it'll tell you all hardware devices of the laptop)
get the proper drivers for the notebook for win-xp from the net(google might be helpful)
install them.
happy computing!

if all this did not work, remove the harddisk,(you'll have to unscrew a lot of the laptop)
replace it by a new s-ata ide-drive()and..
erh.. come again then, this is a long process as well

I deleted win 95 then iwant to install win98

Indeed. If you have the windows 98 disc then just insert it into you CD rom drive and restart the computer. You should have the option of pressing any Key to boot from the CD. If not you need to hit delete a number of times when the machine 1st turns on to enter the Bios set up. In here you can change the boot order. Give your CD ROM drive the highest boot priority. Save & exit. Now you will have the option to boot from CD.

From here you are very much guided by the onscreen prompts. It's a straightforward process.

Sir i have seen that there is ntldr missing

you do have a couple of options. firstly check and double check that you do not have a floppy disk in your PC at boot, if you have remove it.

secondly you are able to restore if you insert the origional win98 cd rom and reboot the pc.( you may need to alter the settings within the bios.
Bios
you are looking to change the boot order so that the CD rom is looked at before the hard disk.
a good order would be floppy disk cd rom then HDD.

hopefully the pc will boot to the win98 cd rom, (from memory you are given the option to repair your installation).
If you do decide to repair the operating system will reinstall from scratch, meaning that you will need to reinstall applications previously installed.

importantly user data will remain, only the operating system will be altered.

you can find more information about this from the following link.

hope this is helpful.

Installation

You need to use floppy disks (called boot disks) to boot DOS with cd-rom drivers, because the win98 cd isn't bootable by default.

I suggest you to go to http://www.bootdisk.com/bootdisk.htm and grab the respective windows 98 boot disk.

You will need a functional computer to write the disk image into the floppy.

After that put the boot order in BIOS as floppy first.

Once you see DOS prompt A:\> just access your cd-rom drive like d: or e: and then type install

How to install os

This is a little difficult but it can B done :) Firstly I dunno if ya need to re-format ya drive? perhaps first ya could try to "Repair" of Win98? If that doesn't work, then, perhaps ya may have to re-format. If the Win98 is on a SEPARATE drive or Partition this also makes a difference.... Basically ... repair/re-install win98, then do a repair of ya Boot menu for XP, as Win98 sets up an incorrect Boot up for XP, and thus must be "Fixed" so XP will boot & show a Dual boot menu.. here are some links to help you step by step... http://pcworld.about.com/magazine/2109p156id111652.htm http://www.thehindubusinessline.com/ew/2004/08/30/stories/2004083000250400.htm
