Question about Toshiba Computers & Internet
Satellite 18.4'' p505d-s8935 want to remove the entire top half of black screen monitor and just use bottom half with external monitor working fine but dead black screen in the way of viewing external monitor
it depends plug in a external monitor to your vga port and see if it works.
if it works then you have to see when you disconnect the display inverter which is under the plastic cover that runs along the length of you power button and hinges.
if the external monitor still works or not.
if you plug in the external monitor in to the vga port and it dosnt work, you have to check the display inverter to see that its still connected or repalce it

Try holding down the "0" (zero) key when you see the Toshiba logo when booting up.
Here is a site with links for your laptop, one of the them will have "your" specific procedure to restore from the "Recovery Partition".

Turn off the Toshiba laptop, remove the AC adapter and any other peripheral devices, and close the lid.
Turn the laptop over.
Touch an unpainted metal surface to discharge any static electricity. Release the battery lock-usually located near the back of the laptop-and remove the battery from its bay.
Remove the screw holding the DVD drive in place.
Where the screw is located depends on your Toshiba's model, but in newer laptops-particularly the Satellite-the screw is located next to the Toshiba sticker.
Unlike the other screws, which are embedded into the laptop, the DVD screw is even with the rest of the laptop's surface.
Gently pull the DVD drive from its bay to remove it from the laptop
hope this helps
