Laptop currently has three 4GB RAM sticks, is it possible to use another 8GB stick to upgrade it to 20GB?

Three of the four slots are being used for 4GB sticks, I want at least 20GB, will it work if I just put in another 8GB stick? Current RAM: Elixir 4GB 2Rx8 PC3-12800S-11-10-F2-1600

It should. But RAM slots have a maximum RAM per slot. Have you checked with manufacturer manual to see what the max ram per slot is? And the max ram per motherboard matters too. Your mobo will only support so much ram.

Can I add more RAM to my Averatec All-In=One A2?

Hey Nella Coffey

Unfortunately, more RAM cannot be installed due the limit of Slots available. However, you may be able to upgrade the current RAM modules and replace them. It appears it has 2048mb (2GB) of RAM which is possible split into two 1GB sticks. You "may" be able to upgrade to 4GB (split into two 2GB sticks). This is the current set up for the computer: 2048MB (4096MB max) SDRAM ' Memory Slots available for Upgrade: 0 ' Maximum RAM per available slot: 2048MB

Good Luck

Unable to add more match RAM using secondary slots

You need the motherboard manual to make sure it can take more.
It may only accept 4 gig. For example: 2 x 2 gig strips or 4 x 1 gig strips.Or you may need to use single sided ram boards, chips on only one side. I know some motherboards do.

What Type and Make of RAM can system use? okca28@hotmail.com

Hi - It takes PC2-4200 240 pin ddr2 ram up to four gigabytes (it has two ram slots total - so it can use a 2 Gb stick per slot.)

Brand - I personally would buy any brand that was cheapest (make sure the seller has a return policy just in case).

Enjoy your upgrade!

I want to add 4GB of DDR3 memory, what further info to I need to know about the memory?

Newegg has a great site to find the correct and most compatible memory for you Here.
To maximize your ram speed, use the same speed and types of ram

For example, if you have a 1GB right now, add three more 1GB than putting in a 2GB and 1GB.
If you have a 4GB ram stick right now, add another 4GB and not 2x2GB. Also make sure the MHz on the ram is the same, (1333, 1600, 2000)

Enjoy upgrading your computer!

What is better? to put four different rams or one single ram of 4gb in p4p800 vm asus motherboard

I would suggest going with a single piece or 2 identical pieces of RAM for expandability purposes. If you want to upgrade later, you will have the option to add more RAM. From a cost standpoint, you might be better off buying 2x 2GB sticks as a single 4GB stick of RAM might well exceed the cost of 2x 2GB sticks.

I have an Acer Aspire 7540-1284 laptop that came with 3GB memory. The specs say expandable to 4GB but the manual says expandable to 8GB using soDimm modules. I can't find info anywhere to support...

it prolly has 2 ram slots, capable of holding a 4gig ram stick apiece- for a total of 8 gigs.

however, the largest ram stick they currently make is 2 gigs. your board can support 2x4gigs of ram (8 altogether), buit the most ram you can currently purchase is 2x2gigs (for 4 gigs altogether).

additionally, you have to have a 64 buit version of windows to regognize all 8 gigs if you had them.
a 32 bit version of windows will recognize no more than 4 gigs of ram.

Could I use MacBook Pro 1G RAM (hynix 1GB 2Rx16 PC3-8500S-7-A1) to upgrade my T400 2G RAM to 3G?

Hello thx5,
It depends on how the 2GB in your T400 is currently configured. If the 2GB in there now is just one 2GB stick of RAM then yes you can add the other 1GB stick and then you will have 3GB of RAM installed. If your 2GB is two 1GB sticks of RAM (which is more likely to be the case) then the 1GB stick you have from your Macbook Pro isn't going to help.

Note: your laptop can handle up to 8GB of RAM via two 4GB sticks.

Hope this helps, if so please leave some good feedback. Thanks.

Memory upgrade

There is many things that can happen with RAM that end up with this issue.

First I'd try removing the 256 and just place the 512mb stick into the first slot and see if that works. If it doesn't there's one of three problems occuring.

Incompatible RAM (which may fit and lock in place but still not meet the requirements systems BIOS, so it will not function)

Oversized RAM Stick (some models will only use single sided sticks of ram, where most of the newer sticks are double sided. This can actually cause problems like this and even sometimes work but only show half of the ram on that stick)

Dead Ram (It's possible and I've had it happen a few times, that you could have a dead stick of RAM. If the 512 stick works alone without the 256 in there; the the problem lies elsewhere.)

Each manufacturer has different specifications on their systems and the ram that they can use. Believe it or not, one laptop I had would only work if you had two matching sticks of RAM in the slots. So, I could use the two 256mb sticks together; but I couldn't use a 512 and a 256. I couldn't run the 1gb stick and a 256 or a 512 stick. It had to be two matching sizes. So, make absolutely sure you have a compatible stick of ram for the laptop (I suggest calling HP/Compaq and asking them if it is the correct chip as you can never be too sure). If it still will not work, then either the laptop won't support all of the 768mb, or you have a dead stick.

Try these things and see what happens. If you still have a problem, by all means, ask away. :)
