I've run the setup software for this new X6690, and XP has pretty much ground to a halt. e.g. desktop takes nearly 15 mins for icons to appear.
This has happened on 2 m/c out of 3 on our network.
Only solution has been to uninstall.
Any thoughts?
Thanks
Simon
Simon,
Been trawling yet more help sites and came across the following link to a Lexmark Slowboot Fix. Click the link below, select the right fix for your printer from the three shown, and install, accepting the terms and conditions. When the resuIting program installs and is run, it opens a dos window and performs some changes to the print spooler. It has made my laptop boot up in about 3 mins, which when compared to the 17 that I was previously experiencing, is like rocket speed !! My printer now works perfectly without any of the jiggery-pokery, I suggested in my last post. Make sure you are booted up with all the Lexmark stuff installed and working, so go through a slow boot, before clicking the link below.
ftp://ftp.lexmark.com/driver/inkjet_drivers/slowboot/32bit/
All the best,
Ian
If you click the link and it isn't recognised, copy and past the link into your browser. When I clicked it from this site, it added a 'FixYa.com' bit to the front, making the link fail.

Simon,
It is worrying that the fix issued by Lexmark was actually made around August 2008, yet I bought my printer in January 2009 (I assume you did too - with PC World's special offer price). You would think that Lexmark would arrange for replacement driver discs to go to all retailers stocking their products. I got a reply from Lexmark tonight, directing me to the fix, which had already been found by somebody else, which I just stumbled across after banging my head against my desk with rage at the inadequacies of Lexmark. I had already been through the Lexmark help on their site and a second look tonight, revealed the fix. It was there all the time, but not in a position, where someone was likely to find it. At least it works now. Good luck with your other PC.
Thank goodness for techy people and their forums..

Hi Simon,
"carranzaeb62" are right, but do not tell you how to:
simply delete your driver:
First, -> remove the cable between your printer and your computer.
then -> Start -> Settings -> Printers and faxunits -> select your printer and hit the delete button.
Restart.
Now, download the latest driver from THIS SITE: click "download now".
Install, - and let me know how you go.

Did you by any chance install
an Antivirus program at the same time?
- if, and you already have
another antivirus program installed, then you will encounter this problem, as
those to programs try to kill each other....

I will try to make this as simple as I can, but since you installed the software drivers for your printer, it slowed down your computer. That is a configuration problem. You do not say what kind of computer you have, but you need to go backwards and get your computer right again without the printer. The reasoning behind this is that the printer is only an output dievice and the computer has all your info in it. Uninstall your printer first and then check performance. If it returns as normal then reinstall through the software your printer, but very careful how you answer the questions with regard to the type printer you have. God bless.

Usually answered in minutes!
I have the same printer and exactly the same problem, with my laptop taking over 17 minutes to boot up to an operating state. I tried to go back to PC World with the printer, but as it works, they say they will not take it back and suggest a configuration problem. I have uninstalled, re-installed and eventually carried out a systematic check using msconfig. I found under the 'services' tab, that if I prevented a file called 'LexBce Server' from running, my laptop (HP Pavilion DV1355 on XP with SP3) boots up as usual. Unfortunately the printer will not communicate as this file works the print server. I have sent an email to Lexmark, but as yet they have not responded. What type of PC do you have, just curiosity in case it is an HP / Lexmark compatibility problem ?
Many thanks for these suggestions.
Carranzaeb62 - I have uninstalled the Lexmark software and that gets rid of the problem, but of course i cannot communicate with the printer. I have re-run set up several times but each time the problem re-appears
Teis - I have Norton on my system, but that's the only antivirus software I'm using.
I deleted the printer in the control panel and rebooted but the probl;em was still there - again it only resolved when I did a complete uninstall.
According to the lexmark website I am using the most up to date version of the printer driver
Youngtommo - really interested to hear you had the same problem. I bought from PC World too and if I cannot get this fixed I will have to try to get a refund. My PCs are not HP, so I do not think there is a connection there. I have emailed Lexmark support but they have not answered. Maybe it is connected with antivirus software as Teis suggests - do you have Norton? Certainly something which is being loaded during setup is causing system instability.
Any more suggestions would be most welcome
Regards to all - Simon
Simon,
Yes, I have Norton Protection Centre loaded. I have never had an issued before, but have never had a wireless printer. I will do some checks with msconfig and see if I can get the printer without the Norton to load up and see if it makes any difference.
Simon,
I took off all reference to Norton from the msconfig startup and system menus and at first I thought I had cracked it as the PC started up quickly. I then put one file back to how it was and it all went pear shaped again. So I took that file back off and unfortunately it remained pear shaped !! Back to the drawing board. I do think there might be a conflict between the Norton Anti-Virus/Firewall and the Lexmark print server, so my next plan is to removed the Norton software completely, see if the PC will start normally without it (but including the Lexmark files) then if that works, re-install the Norton afterwards. The Norton might then allow everything which was working to still work. Perhaps pie in the sky thinking, but as nobody can come up with another option that works, it will be up to you and I Simon to work it out for ourselves !!
Hi Youngtommo
I wonder if you have Quickbooks on your m/c? I have QB on both the PCs I am experiencing trouble with, but not my laptop which (touch wood) gets on fine with the lexmark. It just occurred to me that there might be a connection.
It certainly looks as if there is a software conflict going on so it might be worth comparing what applications we are each running.
Keep in touch = please!!
Simon
No Quickbooks Simon. Sorry. Haven't got round to taking off the Norton yet. Don't have it on disc as I downloaded it and don't want to pay again.
Simon,
Just a quick update. I contacted Norton support last night and spent over two hours with the chat help, speaking with five different engineers. Each time they suggested there could be a conflict, but when they took over my laptop via their remote assistance software and made alterations to the setup, including completely preventing Norton from working, they re-booted, which took my now 'normal' 17 minutes. So in short I have got nowhere with them. I have posted requests for help on three different help forums, contacted HP and contacted Lexmark, but to date it appears you and I are the sole sufferers.
I now have the Lexmark software installed but uncheck a box in msconfig to prevent part of it starting in boot-up. I am fortunate that I don't print/scan much and have never needed to send a fax, but at the moment have resigned myself to a long boot-up whenever I want to print something.
If you still have the Lexmark software installed, perhaps you can try what I have and see if this allows a normal boot-up time. You may be familiar with msconfig, but in case you are not, follow the instructions below.
After installing the software....go to 'START', then 'Run...' and type msconfig in the box that appears and transmit. Under the 'Services' tab, scroll down until you see a file named 'LexBce Server' and uncheck the box next to it. Click 'Apply' then exit the msconfig program and it will suggest re-starting. Let it re-start and see how long it takes to boot-up. Doing this will not alter anything on your PC and will not prevent you going back and re-checking the box.
Once the PC boots up again, the system configuration tool will start automatically. Just check the box on the bottom left saying not to do this every time and your PC should now boot quick every time. If you need to print something, go back in to msconfig as before and re-check the box next to LexBce Server and re-boot. Go make a cup of tea and a slice of toast, then once re-booted, print as normal. Remembering to uncheck the box again before you turn off, to prevent the long boot next time.
If you print alot, ignore the above !! Best of luck....
I should say that PC World offered to take in my laptop and see if they could identify the problem. If it was linked to the Lexmak software, they said they would hopefully fix it (free of charge). If they found another coflict, they would bill me. Haven't decided whether I want to take the plunge or not.

Simon,
Ignore my post below and scrol down to solution #1.... it worked for me.

I feel like I have won the lottery - well almost! It has worked on one of my PCs and I will try it on the other when I have time. I am so grateful to you for passing on the info about this patch.
The fact that the patch comes from lexmark means that they know all about this problem, and yet they did not even bother to answer my email asking for their help. I'm not going to buy a lexmark again.
PC World are not much better; they should make it their business to find out about all these fixes so that they can help their customer too.
Well this has been a triumph for the power of the web and this FixYa website which I had never heard of before.
Thanks for all your help (and to the others who tried!)
Simon
