I understand this is a "interference motor" which means possible valve and or piston damage. but when it broke, i didnt hear a sound . now the belt is back on marks are lined up , runs badly and making alot of racket. if the crank turns two times to the once the cam does, doesnt that mean a possible 180 off on the crank?
SOURCE: I changed the timing belt
If you are hearing the valves hitting the pistons then you have already done head damage but below id the marks:
SOURCE: starter turns crank but timing belt doesnt
If when you try to start it, it turns over very fast, no compression, the valves are damaged.
You will not hear the pistons hitting the valves.
If the timing belt broke or the drive pulley on the crankshaft has sheared off then the engine is dead.
I do not believe this engine is a 'free wheel" design.( You can call a Nisan dealer to verify),
Once this happens the piston hit the Intake/exhaust valves and the repair cost will exceed the value of this old car. You may be able to sell it for parts or scrap metal or like I did, give it away to anyone who will tow it away. And of course never buy another car with a timing belt.

well hold on there cowboy, first consult your service manual if your cars engine is an interference type. it means that if ever your timing belt breaks the valves that were stranded shall be hammered by up moving piston. eventually bending and warping of some of the valves would be a result. sometimes a damaged piston could also happen. timing belt breakage is a very serious matter and should not be taken likely. if you do not have a manual, what i do is removing the whole cyclinder head and inspect it. its better to be sure than sorry. in other cases you could see the warped valves by turning the crankshaft from tdc to 90 deg. and after which try turning the camshaft all the way around and carefully feeling the ease or difficulty in turning it and also the lift and rest of the rocker arms. any deviations you from the standard filler guage clearances would mean a bent or broken valves. hope this helps.
