Bartie,

First we need to properly identify your processor. You can go to AMD's website and under their Support and downloads page download a utility that can properly Identify your CPU Through codes it can read off of your chip.

If it is an Athlon 2800 this tool will tell you so. (Then it is likely your BIOS on the Motherboard just isn't recogniing it properly)

If it is an Athlon 2600 (Which I think is the more likely one) You may have purchased your Athlon from a less than reputable dealer. Who either remarked the chip themself or purchased it from a remarker at a discounted rate.

OK so now your wondering what is "Remarking" . This is when a chip dealer aquires a large amount of lower end chips then modify it by jumping some leads on the chip making it run beyond its intended rate (A process called OVERCLOCKING) and then prints a higher end processors stamp on it allowing them to sell it at a higher cost.

I hope this helps you
Dave

Main memory

You could do that. But I would check to see if you couldn't pick up two 1 GB RAM sticks instead. Memory has gotten cheaper & Windows XP is a memory hog that likes at least 1 GB of RAM.
