NVIDIA graphics card messing up computer

My son installed a used NVIDIA geforce 5200 card, downloaded the driver, since we couldn't find the CD, and when he went to use the computer it was all messed up. We are wondering if the computer needs to be upgraded somewhere before he can use that card. The card that was in it is an NVIDIA tnt. His computer is an older one, Compaq Presario 5900. We would appreciate any help. I was going to buy him a new graphics card, but if we need to upgrade the computer, I would like to do that first.

MrScary66613: we don't know much about computers, is this something a novice can do? if so, what do we purchase?

I was thinking that it would be better to buy another computer, but he is resisting spending the money. Thanks for the help. I'll work on him.

Sounds like the Processor on the Motherboard-Pentium Whatever you have-Will not support the Power that the Invidia Card is Requiring. An Upgrade would solve this Problem.

No Problem! He is trying to Play games with this PC Right? It needs to be Upgraded with the Pentium 4 Processor or Higher to do what he needs to do. Seriously, I had to Purchase a Whole new PC to Upgrade mine. It was just Cheaper to do so. Some of the Older Models will not Carry the Upgrade. You would Probably be Better off just getting a New one than trying to Upgrade one that will not Carry the Upgrade. I know that it is not Cheap, Paid 4,600 for my Gateway But, It is Completely Upgradeable. You do not have to pay that Much for a new one though-I just went ALL out! All that you need is a PC with a Pentium 4 or Higher and the Graphics Package. FYI-Gateway Rocks and the Customer Support is out of this world!!!!!

Hi.

You do not necessarily need to disable the built in graphic adapter, the computer can manage two different adapters.
The nVidia should show picture with standard VGA definition (800x600 only) if simply connected to the AGP or PCI slot even if drivers are not installed, and even if built in GPU is not disabled.
If there is no picture, check installation in slot, check that card is not disabled in BIOS, check video cable is well connected, and if nothing works, test the video adapter on different PC, the card may be faulty.

Nvidia v-vard

First, look at the card and make sure it's actually an Nvidia Geforce FX 5200. Of so, then you probably installed the wrong drivers for the card. Make sure you go to the Nvidia website and download the correct drivers for the card after deleting the ones already installed. Installing the incorrect drivers could cause Windows to report the wrong type of card is installed in your PC.

The only time that this can happen is if the driver is not installed correctly, as on install you are normally asked if you want to activate support for dual monitors, so if you havent already, uninstall the card driver, restart and install driver again from the cd or from the NVIDIA website. http://www.nvidia.com/object/winxp_2k_93.71.html If you have already tried this my apologies.
