NVIDIA graphics card messing up computer

My son installed a used NVIDIA geforce 5200 card, downloaded the driver, since we couldn't find the CD, and when he went to use the computer it was all messed up. We are wondering if the computer needs to be upgraded somewhere before he can use that card. The card that was in it is an NVIDIA tnt. His computer is an older one, Compaq Presario 5900. We would appreciate any help. I was going to buy him a new graphics card, but if we need to upgrade the computer, I would like to do that first.

MrScary66613: we don't know much about computers, is this something a novice can do? if so, what do we purchase?

I was thinking that it would be better to buy another computer, but he is resisting spending the money. Thanks for the help. I'll work on him.

Sounds like the Processor on the Motherboard-Pentium Whatever you have-Will not support the Power that the Invidia Card is Requiring. An Upgrade would solve this Problem.

No Problem! He is trying to Play games with this PC Right? It needs to be Upgraded with the Pentium 4 Processor or Higher to do what he needs to do. Seriously, I had to Purchase a Whole new PC to Upgrade mine. It was just Cheaper to do so. Some of the Older Models will not Carry the Upgrade. You would Probably be Better off just getting a New one than trying to Upgrade one that will not Carry the Upgrade. I know that it is not Cheap, Paid 4,600 for my Gateway But, It is Completely Upgradeable. You do not have to pay that Much for a new one though-I just went ALL out! All that you need is a PC with a Pentium 4 or Higher and the Graphics Package. FYI-Gateway Rocks and the Customer Support is out of this world!!!!!

How to install fx5500 to intel d915gag mother board

1) Turn the computer on. After Windows has fully loaded, install the Installation Disk that comes with the Nvidia GeForce FX5500 graphics card, into the optical drive. (CD/DVD drive)

The disk has the Drivers, and Nvidia Control Panel.

http://us.download.nvidia.com/Windows/175.19/175.19_NVIDIA_Control_Panel_Quick_Start_Guide.pdf

Driver: Small piece of software that allows the Operating System to communicate with a device.
Windows XP is the O/S.
The Nvidia GeForce FX5500 is the device.

Don't have the disk?

http://www.nvidia.com/object/winxp_175.19_whql.html

Download AND install.

[After you click on Download, a small window will come up on the right -
Opening 175.19_geforce_winxp_32bit_english_whql.exe

Click on Save File.
Another small window will open on the left. Allow the file to fully download, then DOUBLE-click right on the file name.
At the bottom of the next three small windows, click on Next, Next, and Finish.
Now restart the computer.

Windows will NOT use these drivers until the graphics card is installed, so don't worry about messing the graphics up.

Why?
Because when a device is installed, Windows 'breaks it's neck' to find suitable, matching drivers.
If THE drivers are not there, Windows will match up one of it's THOUSANDS of generic, one size fits all drivers.

This = No.
This is why you want THE drivers installed first, THEN physically install the graphics card ]

2) Unplug the computer from power. Press the Power On button in, and hold it in for a count of 10 seconds. Let go. Do this procedure two more times. (Drains the residual power)

3) FOLLOW Anti-Static Precautions.

Anti-Static Precautions:
Your body carries Static electricity. Static WILL fry out (Short Circuit), the delicate hardware components of a computer.

Relieve your body of Static BEFORE working on the computer.

Computer ON a table, computer unplugged from power, computer case open;
TOUCH an unpainted surface, of the metal frame of the open computer case.
This action will relieve your body of Static.

IF you leave your computer in the middle of working on it, be SURE to Touch the metal frame again upon your return.

Don't follow Anti-Static Precautions, may as well get ready to use your motherboard for a Frisbee, or a doorstop.

4) There is a Locking Arm on the PCI-Express x16 slot. It looks as though you press down to unlock.

No.

Gently pull up a little, as you push the graphics card Straight down into the PCI-Express x16 slot.

5) Be SURE to connect the monitor cable to the graphics card, and not back into the I/O area. (Motherboard)

Graphics card for asus p4p800-mx

Hello there, I will be your technician today. My name is Norman-Wynne Damstra.

Welcome to Fixya!

On the rear of the mainboard, called the Input/Output or I/O you will find a blue VGA port, this is your on-board graphics adaptor/graphics card. Therefore you may use this port to connect your monitor to.

Alternatively if you are looking for a graphics card to fit your computer mainboard, you will need to install one that uses the PCI slot. That is the White slot. You may install the graphics card in any of the three available PCI slots.

You could contact your computer store and ask them if they have a PCI graphics card, or search E-bay or the like for a PCI graphics card. Brands by Nvidia or AMD/ATI radeon will work. A Nvidia Geforce 5200 or 5500 may do the trick, usually 128mb versions.

Take care!
Norman-Wynne Damstra

Pc died

Hello, I have had similar problems with that same motherboard in the past and have found that resetting the cmos (see users manual) or just taking the battery of the motherboard for a few minutes can solve this. CAUTION please remove the power lead on your tower before touching any components inside, and earth yourself first by touching metal.. as static discharge kills pc components..
Hope this helps.....

Nvidia Geforce FX5200 128mb DDR AGP 8x

Hi, since you mentioned you installed an MSI card & it worked well. I can assume you changed the bios & to boot to the AGP rather than the Integrated 3D video. This is good. Notice the message you got from Nvivia. It could not locate any compatible drivers. This can indacates 1 of 4 reasons.
1. The 5200 was not completely incerted into the AGP slot.
2. The AGP slot is dirty & needs cleaned.
3. Nvidia software was installed but previouse graphics software was not removed (un-installed) before the installation of the nvidia software.
4.The card is bad.
Suggest you download the latest driver software from Nvidia.
