Re: can't turn one unit off when I turn the volume...
Unfortunately, your volume potentiometer (the part behind your volume knob, which connects to the component board, has gone bad. This can happen from turning the knob too far past full volume or even sometimes when turning it off. The part to repair this has never been offered as a replacement part. Your only solution is to remove the battery to turn the unit off.

The amp protection circuit has been activated. Remove the power cord from the wall outlet immediately. Disconnect all speaker cables and input sources, and leave the AV receiver with its power cord disconnected for 1 hour. After that, reconnect the power cord and reconnect an input and a pair of speaker wires onto the unit. If the receiver still does not turn on than you will have to bring it in for service. Turn up the volume and if the receiver doesn't shut down, power off the receiver and add another pair of speakers. Power up the unit again and turn up the volume. If it doesn't shut down, power off the unit again. Now connect all your input sources and turn on your receiver. If the unit shuts down again, your unit will need to be further serviced at an authorized Onkyo service center.
You have a grounded out speaker wire or blown speaker. Disconnect speaker wires at the unit. Make sure the wires are not touching, turn the unit on, then turn the volume back up. If it stays on, it is a wire or speaker. Re-connect one speaker at a time and test. once you find the bad wire/speaker, disconnect the wire at the speaker and test again. This will determine if it's the speaker or wire.
If after disconnecting the speaker wires it still cuts out, check your ground and meter the DC voltage at the power wire. If you do not have enough current at the radio, it will shut off as well. Usually this will happen at about 9.8v dc.

Are you sure you getting enough power to push everything. I have seen when the voltage is too low coming in, the amps will shut down so they don't overheat. Once they've cooled off and the volume level is lowered they will kick in again. Low voltage and a heavy draw will create massive amounts of heat.
Please check the voltage and the current factor on your power outlet., If you happen to observe that the plug pins are heating then there is insufficient current on the plug point.
if the voltage goes down after the ac starts the power is down and so the efficiency of the A/C is lost. Also once the A/C shuts down then the timer delay will work to keep it away from restarting the compressor.- protection mode.
Disconnect all speaker wires at the receiver, then turn it back on. Turn up the volume. If it shuts down, it needs to be serviced. If it stays on, reconnect speakers one at a time and turn on the receiver then turn up volume. When you find the speaker that causes the receiver to shut down, disconnect the wire at the speaker and re- test. make sure wires are separated. If it shuts down, replace the wire, if it stays on, meter the speaker itself to check for a bad vioce coil. If you don't have a meter, you can take the speaker to any audio shop or Radio Shack and they will usually test it for free. Hope this helps.
i think you have a main board problem and also moiture may have got to it .
electronics are not what they use to be and these days you really have to place them in the right spot or it wont last .
the main volume dial may require cleaning .
Mute the volume and listen at the rear of the unit. You should be able to hear a fan running since these have hot-spots that require some kind of air movment to keep them from overheating.
There are protective circuits that will shut down the power supply once a critical temperature is reached.
The second possibility is the power supply itself; these sophisticated units are very energy efficient but have components in them that age and lose their function over time.
The main supply should be fairly easy to spot; it will have larger components on it, some cylindrical (capacitors), others block-like.
If the fan is running and it is still shutting down, this supply may need repair or replacement.
Look for a part number on the board and inquire at the manufacturer's service center about those possibilities.
Have your model & serial numbers of the set available too.
Disconnect all speaker wires at the receiver then turn it back on and the volume up. If it stays on, post a comment and I can walk you thru troubleshooting. If it still shuts down there is an internal problem and it needs to be serviced.
If you have zone 2 active with the level turned up too much it will cut out the whole unit. Try disconnecting zone 2 speakers, then turn the volume level way down on zone 2 and it should stay on if that is the problem.
check your ground, it could be that your antenna is the only source of ground, in which case the deck does not have enough power to stay on when it draws too much power. I've seen exactly what you are saying many many times. Ground it really reallly good.
