Question about Oreck XL Ultra Bagged Upright Vacuum

1 Answer

Stopped running My mother's Oreck vacuum sound as if there was something bogging the rotating brush down. I pulled the bottom cover off and found nothing wrapped around or restricting the brush. I tried to finish vacuuming with the problem then I turned it off to move a chair and turned it back on it would do nothing. Any suggestions as to what could be causing the vacuum to sound as if the rotating brush is being restricted from turning. There was not odor of burning as if the motor was in a bind.

Your suggestion fixed my problem. The Oreck is working again, not as well as it should; but I am sure the problem should have been checked out sooner.

I am excited that I found the FixYa site, I know it will be very helpful in the future.

    Thanks again for you help

Orecks have a plastic fan inside and everything you pick up hits it, sometimes things can get stuck in there or break the fan locking up the motor. With the machine off, poke around where the dirt goes into the motor, behind the roller and see if you can pull anything out.

When do i replace the belt?

Kevin, you can replace them anytime that you need to. One way to tell if it needs to be replaced is, if when you run the vacuum and the brush will stop when it makes contact with the carpet, it is time to replace. If you are wondering because the vacuum no longer pulls itself across the floor like it used to, that might be a belt problem as well, but could also be a brush problem. If you take the bottom cover off and look at the bearing blocks at each end of the roller, you will see one side that has several "hash" marks and the opposite side will only have one. When you take the cover off, if you see several hash marks, rotate the bearing block at both ends until you see only one and re-install the brush and change your belt. When you see several marks that means it has been in there since the brush was new. The single mark side will actually lower the brush closer to the floor and will allow the vacuum to pick up better. If you only see one mark when you take the cover off, you might have to replace the brush roller to get good pick up. Hope this helps!

Oreck vacuum cleaner stop and burn smell

sounds like hair or string or something like that is wrapped around the beater bar(the long brush under the head that brushes the carpet) keeping it from turning. The belt that drives the bar is getting hot because the beater bar is stuck.

My oreck xl21 won't pull itself.

You need to rotate your brush or replace the brush. Lay your Oreck down, unplugged with the base plate facing up. Remove the 5 screws that hold the plate on and remove the plate. Look at the bearing blocks at each end of the brush, what you are going to be3 looking for are a series of "hash" marks on the black plastic mount. If you see several, rotate the block until you only see one mark at each end and reinstall the brush and belt and that should take care of your issue. If you only see one mark, you need a new brush roller. Hope this helps!

Oreck brush does not rotate

The belt has broke. The easiest way to replace is by removing baseplate on bottom. There are 5 screws.

My oreck vacuum cleaner belt does not stay on. After puting it on, and it seems like it will stay, it comes right off after a minute of vaccuuming

Some of those belts require a twist to provide the correct motion on the brush and stay on.
To determine the existing motion, install the belt and carefully stand the Vacuum on the handle and observe the rotation of the brush while running. The brush rotation direction should be into it's self so when it's on the floor it acts like it's trying to pull the vacuum forward.
If the brush is throwing dust forward and feels like it's pushing away its incorrectly mounted. Look at the operator manual and it should have a section on belt installation.
Best wishes,
TF

Just purchased a reconditioned model. Makes a ton of noise and the bottom brush doesn't seem to turn like in my old Oreck. Does that indicate it needs a new belt?

Your Dyson does have a belt but its one that cant be replaced it is called a clutch assy. if your roller brush isnt spinning then it could be that you dont have the purple knob on the left hand side if your facing the vacuum to the carpet setting. if you do have it on the carpet setting and its still not spinning then your clutch need to be replaced.
dyson roller brushes donot rotate as fast as Oreck roller brushes. in fact they are rotate at about half the speed. so keep that in mind.

I bought a replacement brushroll because the one in the vaccum cleaner is worn out.How do I go about putting the brush in the vaccum cleaner. Do I pull it out or do I have to unscrew the entire bottom...

Greetings from GoVacuum,

Make sure the vacuum is NOT plugged in. In order to replace the roller brush, you'll need to unscrew the 6 screws on the bottom plate of the vacuum cleaner. Oreck uses a Phillips Head screw, so you'll need to get a Phillips head screw driver to replace the brush.

After removing the screws from the bottom plate, simply pull up on the plate by putting your fingers into the open area where the existing brush is located. After the bottom plate has been removed you will have access to the roller brush and belt.

You can now just grab the roller brush and pull straight up on it. It's beneficial to change the belt of the vacuum when you're replacing the roller brush anyways. There is a spare belt on the actual bottom plate of all Oreck XL vacuums.

You'll notice that the new roller brush has two black square plastic caps on both sides of the roller brush. You can look on the outside of this black cap, and you'll see the words OLD and NEW. Rotate the NEW side so it's facing upwards, and the OLD side is the side that's down inside the vacuum cleaner, make sure that both sides have the NEW side facing upwards. You'll need to wrap the belt around the silver pin in the back of the vacuum on one side, and through the roller brush's metal pulley on the other side. The just stretch the belt with the brush inside of it, and place the black plastic parts back into the vacuum cleaner.

Congratulations, you've now just replaced the roller brush in your Oreck!

My oreck vacuum has stopped sucking up things.

It won't turn the brush because the belt is stretched or broke from the heat of sucking something too big up. If you have your service manual it should show you the location of the belt covers to replace it.

How do I replace the brush roll on my oreck xl??

Turn the vacume upside down. Remove the 5 screws on the bottom plate. 3 are near the brush roll, and 2 are near the back. Remove the bottom plate. take the belt off the motor end. pull up on both ends of the brush roll. Put new brush roll on making sure that you put both ends to the new position, not old. ( it is marked on one end, and there are marks on the side that goes up so the can match.)(If putting back the old brush roll you can switch to the old position. After a year or two you can switch the new brush roll to the old position.) Put the bels back on the motor shaft and then stretch and start the belt on the brush roll and rotate the brushroll by hand untill the belt is all the way on.
put the bottom plate back on and tighten the 5 bottom screws.
