Had the same problem. You will have to hard reset - in doing so you will lose all data on your device. Sorry I know no other way.
Step 1: Charge your device overnight. Step 2: While holding down the reset button (back of unit) hold the power button down. Release the reset and wait for the Palm screen to appear. When it does, release the power. Press the "up" button when prompted for full restore.
You should now be working. Word of warning: I continue to have problems with HotSynch. The version recommended by Palm (v. 4.1.4) locks up my system, as if it is emulating another device (no buttons work, screen wonky, etc.).

How to Replace the Battery in Your Palm Tungsten E2 PDA. Aaron Kelly ... for battery replacement. Includes one year money back guarantee!
HP, the new "supporter" of all things Palm, has provided Palm Support Palm Tungsten E2 Palm Desktop 6 2 and HotSync Manager... to give "legacy" Palm PDA's a fighting chance with Win7; I have heard of no such efforts promised for Win8.
There has been at least one entrepreneur who have been refurbishing/customizing Palm PDAs for sale at Amazon that are guaranteed to run on Win 7, and some have commented that they would customize a personal unit...for a price. However, I have not heard if anyone has yet try to attack the Win 8 problem. I have heard there are inherent barriers between Win8 and PalmOS which cannot be resolved, but I have no idea what they were. Good Luck.
This is hard to say what it is for sure but I would think your problem is your battery needs replacement. The wifi works fine with a good battery but uses much more power than anything else so it can quickly drain an older battery. If it is older than a year or so it might be it. I have a lifedrive that will kill a battery within a few minutes on the wifi. When new I could use it for several hours. If you put it on the charger it should work normally if this is the case.
The best thing to do is to go to the free palm chat service they offer.
I have used this and it worked good for me. Here is a link
to the free chat service. Scroll to the bottom of the page and you will
see a Palm Chat. From there click on the link that says Chat Now and
follow the online prompts. Best wishes...I hope this will help you.
I was having a similar problem with my M515. I had originally installed the Palm Desktop from my CD, which was an older version. When I totally uninstalled the old version and installed the newer version from the Palm website I was able to do a successful sync. I'm using Windows Vista Ultimate and Palm Desktop version 4.1.4
