SOURCE: Machine not sewing

Make sure you have threaded the machine from right to left, it sounds like the needle thread is trapped under the lower looper thread and cannot form a stitch.........start the threading over from scratch like this:

  1. Lower Looper
  2. Upper Looper
  3. Left Needle
  4. Right Needle
Is there a diagram for how to thread on the inside of the door ?

Follow that slowly and carefully to make sure you have not missed any thread guides on the way, as each one needs to be followed through to ensure correct tension and thread progression.

If you are certain that all threaded correctly, did you have a fabric jam and pulled it loose ? If so, the timing may well be affected.

Post an update and we'll get this right.

SOURCE: Tension disc assembly - sewing machine

Sorry but there is no way to explain how to re-assemble the tension mech on here, you need to be actually shown or have someone do it for you. It is very fiddly and needs to be exact, can I suggest you get in touch with a sewing machine tech who(at cost) will sort you out.
Sorry I cannot be of any further help.

SOURCE: Feed dogs do not come back up after lowering

Are you talking about the feed dogs or the presser foot. Either way, if you moved a lever to lower them, there is probably a screw that either fell out or has become loose that holds the linkage to the lever.

SOURCE: presser foot lever does not lift presser foot

If you can remove the cover on the left side you will see the presser foot bar. On the bar there will be a screw that may be loose. Turn the handwheel until the needle is all the way down and lift the foot manually until just before it makes contact with the needle clamp and tighten the screw on the presser foot bar.
That should do it.

Can I put an Elgin machine in a Singer cabinet?

You probably can but not without doing some (maybe a lot of) retrofitting. Difference in machine footprint will make a big difference. Also, connecting the lifting hardware, etc. adds to the overall difficulty. You could always ask a handyman familiar with woodworking but chances are, the expense will be more than the machine is worth. But, then sometimes nostalgia wins!

How do I mount model 4830C to cabinet?

If it could be attached to a table so the machine will flip down and be hidden, it would need some sort of metal loops (hinge pin attachment) on the bottom at the back of the machine. You also would have to have the hardware (bolts, nuts, etc) to attach it.
How to Install Sewing Machine into Cabinet

or, frequently, you will have a sewing table with a separate insert that can be lowered or raised and your sewing machine just sets on that adjustable insert. Then you just raise or lower the dropped insert until the sewing machine surface is level with the table's top surface.

Is your machine an Air Electronic SU? these were numbered 68 and 69, one was the standard base, the other a duplex base designed to go into a cabinet. The duplex base ones have a dished shape lower plate and the machine can be pivoted up out of the base to use as free arm, or lowered back down to use flush. The standard model has a flat base with four rubber feet.

So if your machine is a standard base Elna then you need to set it on a lowered platform so the top of the free arm is level with the top of your cabinet surface. You may have to rig up something suitable to achieve this different level rather than mounting the machine itself.

Horn sewing cabinets allow you to do this, you set the hydraulic lift platform to the right level so the top of the arm is level with the top of the cabinet, then they sold a persplex piece that would fit around the machine filling in the area between the free arm and the outside of the platform area giving you a flush platform.

Can I mount this machine in a sewing cabinet

This is a portable machine so it can't be mounted with hinges like a flat bed can. However, there are cabinets that have a counter balanced carrier bed that allow you to raise and lower the machine. They are expensive.

I have a horn cabinet bought in 1987 and I can't

The old Horn lifts had vertical rails on the sides and the newer style has one center support. Push the lever up and press down on the platform to lower, push up on the lever and the platform should raise. If it binds, the plastic slides are broken or if the cables are loose, then the lift is likely broken. www.hornofamerica.com

I have a old Elna machine. The air electronic SU 390 B. I have lost the manual and am trying to do buttonholes on a dress. I have forgotten the sequence of nob adjustments to complete the process.

Is this the duplex model with the base that fits into a sewing cabinet?

My Elna booklet lists a SP "air electronic" duplex (CL.39), if so, then it would be same stitches as the 38, yellow front panel, 7 built in stitches and automatic knob with blue markings for buttonholing.

Here is the SU manual images for buttonholing, should be exactly the same for the SP.

tally_girl_4.jpg Instructions are:
use buttonhole foot. turn the 3 dials to buttonhole marked in blue (stitch selection, width and length).
Mark length of buttonhol on the material. Place work under foot with the mark in the middile fo the foot, the start being directly below the needle. sew the first side, raise the needle. Turn stitch width dial to 2, blue. Sew a few stitches for bartack. Raise the needle.
Turn stitch width dial to 3 blue. sew the second side. stop just short of the first side. Raise the needle.
turn the stitch width dial to 4 blue. sew a few stitches for bartack. Raise the needle.
Turn stitch width dial to "fastening off stitch" blue dot. Sew a few stitches, holding back the material by hand. Raise needle, lift pressure foot and remove work, triming off threads.
Open the buttonhole with your seam ripper (put a pin across the end to avoid any nasties).

Raising and Lowering the feed dog on Janome 4900 MC

These machines are known to have this problem. The feed lift cam has a groove worn in it that won't allow the feed dogs to come back up. It is on the lower shaft and needs to be replaced. You can get the feed dogs back up by taking off the needle plate and lifting them up manually while turning the hand wheel. They should stay up until you drop them again.
Some people will not replace the cam and live with it.
good luck!
