No IP address when connecting to dsl. Repeating problem

Toshiba TecraM4, xp. Have had this problem before and computer repair had me format hardrive.Worked for a while but started again.I have trouble connecting to wireless and to DSL. My other toshiba (which I am using now) connects fine with no problem.I have checked the services, but cannot see anything that is disabled that would stop computer from obtaining an IP address.

It is possible that the network card is not working correctly without Windows warning of this.
try once again the ipconfig command (that's to get a new ip address) and see what happens.

Turn the DSL modem off.

Turn the Linksys router off.

Turn your computer off.

Check that all the cables are correct & are connected:
* 2-wire or 4-wire cable between telephone wall-port and DSL modem;
* 8-wire cable between DSL modem and the WAN (or 'Internet') port on the router;
* 8-wire cable between one of the LAN ports on the router to the network-port on your computer.

Turn the DSL modem on, and wait until its blinking-lamps settles down to a repeating pattern.

Turn the router on, and wait until its blinking-lamps settles down to a repeating pattern.
Ensure that the lamp for the WAN connection is on.

Turn your computer on, and let it boot.
Ensure that the lamp for one of the LAN ports on the router lights up as the computer is starting.

After your computer has booted, your router should have assigned an IP-address to your computer.
Click Start
Click Run
Type CMD
Press Enter
Type IPCONFIG
Press Enter
You should see an IP address like '192.168.xxx.yyy' for your computer,
and a similar IP-address for your "default gateway".
If you see an IP address like '169.254.xxx.yyy', then your computer has *NOT* obtained a *valid* IP-address.

Also, your router should have obtained an IP-address from your ISP (AT&T),
and you should have Internet access -- try to access 'www.CatsThatLookLikeHitler.com' (or any other web-site).

Your Toshiba Satellite Pro might be using a specified IP address. Try to set it to obtain an IP automatically. Depending on the Windows OS, whether it is XP, Vista or Windows 7, go to your Control Panel then Network connections or Network Sharing Center and double click on the Local Area Network connection (if your are using wired) or Wireless Connection. Look for the TCP/IP protocol and make sure it is enabled as "Obtain IP address Automatically" and "Obtain DNS addresses automatically". Then click OK to save settings.

But do you have any internet connection??if yes and if its DSL than ur dsl router will automatically provide ip to ur pc???

make sure that your router is acting like a DHCP server.
also make sure that your pc's ip is set to "obtain automatically" under local area connection->properties->internet protocol->properties

You need firewall functions enabled, then go to Connections -> DSL -> Properties -> Advanced and check the box "Internet connection sharing".

You will need another network from which the connections come, that will be routed through the DSL connection. Select this network in the drop down box just below. I expect it will be something like, "LAN Connection #1" or such.

The other machines shall have to be configured to have the DSL'ed PC as gateway. In the LOCAL network connection properties of the DSL'ed PC, check the IP address assigned to it. Then in all the other PC's local conn properties, put the DSL'ed PC IP address as gateway.

Hello My problem is that I have A Toshiba Satellite A100 model laptop. I have formated it and install windows XP Professional in it. It install successfully and it also find network adapter 1394...


The devices that have a yellow ? against indicated that device drivers was not installed.

You can download any/all the Windows XP device drivers for your model laptop from the Toshiba WEB site from their download page.
Make sure you enter the model of your laptop so you can get the correct drivers.

Cannot share connection


The IP address that you have is an automatic IP address the Windows generates. It basically means your computer is not getting an IP address from the router (DHCP). You should try powering everything off. Then, in this order, power on your modem, wait 30 seconds, then, power on your router, wait 30 seconds, then power on your computers...This should fix the problem since one computer is working already.

Most of DSL modems are connected to PC with USB cable...
n if ur server is connected with other pc on lan .. you can use internet sharing option available in winxp.

Following are the steps to enable Internetsharing for other pcs.


How to use Internet Connection Sharing loadTOCNode(2, 'summary'); To use Internet Connection Sharing to share your Internet connection, the host computer must have one network adapter that is configured to connect to the internal network, and one network adapter or modem that is configured to connect to the Internet.

On the host computer loadTOCNode(3, 'summary'); On the host computer, follow these steps to share the Internet connection:
  1. Log on to the host computer as Administrator or as Owner.
  2. Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
  3. Click Network and Internet Connections.
  4. Click Network Connections.
  5. Right-click the connection that you use to connect to the Internet. For example, if you connect to the Internet by using a modem, right-click the connection that you want under Dial-up.
  6. Click Properties.
  7. Click the Advanced tab.
  8. Under Internet Connection Sharing, select the Allow other network users to connect through this computer's Internet connection check box.
  9. If you are sharing a dial-up Internet connection, select the Establish a dial-up connection whenever a computer on my network attempts to access the Internet check box if you want to permit your computer to automatically connect to the Internet.

    address 192.168.0.1. Your computer may lose connectivity with other computers on
    your network. If these other computers have static IP addresses, it is a good idea to set them
    to obtain their IP addresses automatically. Are you sure you want to enable Internet
    Connection Sharing?
  11. Click Yes.
The connection to the Internet is shared to other computers on the local area network (LAN). The network adapter that is connected to the LAN is configured with a static IP address of 192.168.0.1 and a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0

Hi,
The first thing I would do is check to make sure the desktop with XP has the network card set to "obtain an IP address automatically"

if it is set to obtain an ip address automatically, I need to know the following:

What is the IP addresss of the router?
What is the IP address of the Vista computer?
What is the IP address of the xp computer?

You can find the ip address by going to start, then run, then type cmd and hit enter. at a command prompt type: ipconfig and hit enter.

Can't connect to internet using DSL


Open My computer, then My network places. Then open View network connections. Your connection should say "Local area connection". Right click it and make sure it's set to "Enabled". Then Right click it then select repair.
