Looking at the manual for this motherboard your maximum ram is 512mb in two sticks of 256mb each. Speed rating is pc133 (maximum). You may struggle with the external hard drive as you only seem to have usb 1.1 and not usb 2.0
pls check the RAM try re installing the RAM or try replacing them , may be it is a co incedent u thought it as a bios update failure pls check and reply back with mother board complete model number and manufacturer with processor details
I had the same problem and ASUS tech support was of no help. I did however find the culpret in the BIOS setup. Go to Advanced, Chipset, NorthBridge Chipset, and Memory Configuration. Set the Bank Interleaving to Disabled and save the settings. Check these settings also while you are there:
Channel Interleaving = Auto
Enable clock to all DIMMS = Disabled
Memory Tristate = Disabled
Memory Hole = Enabled
Unganged Mode = Enabled
Power Down Enable = Enabled
Power Down Mode = Channel

You can upgrade your pc to intel chipset original motherboard...and do it to intel core 2 duo processor. if u want to upgrade ur ram then go for 1GB ram...
and 250 GB hard disk
and finally go for pentium-IV
and dvd writter...
and use microsoft mouse and keyboard
bcoz it does not require driver to be installed
