Reboot your computer and run normal, then hit FN keys and hit the key that has a monitor picture..usually on the f1- f12 keys do it both at once it should send the signal to the tv

depending on what type of tv you have you might have to cycle through inputs to get the signal to read make sure tv is on first before turning on laptop

SOURCE: HP Pavillion DV9000 ''Checkered Screen''

I noticed a bios update for your laptop from the hp site

You can download it here http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareDownloadIndex?softwareitem=ob-64061-1&lc=en&dlc=en&cc=us&lang=en&os=228&product=1842189

It is dated 8 of 2008 and it may or may not address your problem. I would try this first befor I would replace your screen.

I suggest that you do a system restore via safe mode.

If you don't how to go to safe mode, please follow the following steps:

1. Turn on your computer and tap F8. Keep tapping until you see the screen where you can find the option to go to safe mode.

2. Highlight safe mode and press enter.

3. when you are inside safe mode, do a system restore to the date when it was still working fine. It should work.

I hope this helps.

Please restart the computer and go to safe mode by tapping F8 key once the system is restarting choose Enable VGA Mode (Windows XP)

Turn the computer on and straight away start tapping F8. When you get the advanced boot options choose low resolution mode or VGA Mode. When windows loads up your graphics will look really bad but you can sort out the resolution from control panel.
