Question about Zonet ZSR4134WE Wireless Router

1 Answer

How do I disable Zonet router's firewall?

Also, how risky is this if I have Windows firewall? I am having difficulty accessing certain websites wirelessly on my personal home network (no problem when connected directly to modem, or on other wireless networks). I suspect a bad IP address, but the ISP will not help until I troubleshoot potential issues with the router. Cannot find Zonet contact details anywhere! Modem = Motorola SURFboard SB6141, problem exists on all machines connected to the wireless network

You may want to try to manually configure the router with an static DNS. You should be able to contact your ISP for the DNS server IP and then log into your router and enable manual DNS settings on your router to use the DNS IP address.

Since Zonet no longer exist you should have a user guide handy,

Access your router via the built in configuration page, default is http://192.168.1.1. I'm assuming you're the administrator; If not, contact him/her. At the top of the window, select the "Access Restrictions" tab. The policies will be listed and can be modified.

Norton keeps blocking my router because it thinks a particular website is introducing a "Portscan" worm. It then blocks all access to any website for 30 minutes! Patrick

If you are running XP service pack 2 or higher you have the Windows firewall installed.
Windows firewall will always conflict with a third party firewall and despite the fact Norton informs you the Windows firewall is disabled it's not.
Norton is a serious resource hog, consider removing Norton and going with one of the free antivirus apps like AVG 8.0 or Avast.
Enabling the Windows firewall and using a router will protect you, all modern routers have a built in hardware firewall.

Software Firewalls and Linksys Routers

You can never have too much security, however there are some firewalls that will not work with hardware firewalls, that includes the all Linksys Routers . Keeping this in mind, some software firewall will continue working after the router is installed. If it does, it shouldn't need to remove it, because it's an extra layer of security. However if there are difficulties using the Internet with the Software firewall after installing the router, try disableing it to see if internet is accessable. If the internet works after disabling the software firewall, then remove the firewall.

WIN XP

Windows XP includes a built in firewall. By default, the firewall is enabled (turned on). In order to use your router, you must turn off the Windows XP firewall. Your router already provides a firewall for you so turning off the Windows XP firewall will not make your system any less secure. Follow the steps below to disable your Windows XP firewall: 1. Right-click on "My Network Places" on the Desktop. 2. Select "Properties" from the menu that is displayed. 3. Right-click on the Local Area Connection icon that corresponds to your network adapter. 4. Select "Properties" from the menu that is displayed. 5. Click the "Advanced" tab. 6. "Internet Connection Firewall" will have a checkmark next to it. Remove this checkmark by clicking it once. 7. Click "OK" to apply the change. Windows will ask you if you want to turn off the firewall. Click "Yes" You have now successfully disabled the Windows XP firewall. You are still protected by your router's firewall. You should now be able to access your router.
