Question about D-Link DE 809TC (DE-809TC) Networking Hub

1 Answer

Have Mac OS9 G4 (from 1999) and want to link to HP 4050N ethernet printer, what are Mac friendly hubs for this? Would a DE-809TC D-Link hub work?

I do not need to connect to the internet (too old to do so anyhow). Any suggestions for a HARDWIRED hub that may work?

That was an interesting answer from MiB8888, but I don't need to connect to the internet. I just need to print files from the Mac to the printer. I am assuming I need a network set up like a hub or switch. I happen to have this DE-809TC, so thought this might do, since no other computers are involved (thus if it sends packets to all 8 ports, no need to worry)

Yes, but regardless of connection type the computer still needs the printer drivers. You may want to setup printer via USB to establish that it works. Then you still need a router or smart switch that will assign an IP address and or DNS name. This is a simple hub and will not work without an DHCP server (on router).

No. You need a router to set / obtain an IP or connect it directly to the computer RS232 serial port. No network required, but is old school and may be difficult. Specially with MAC. You are better off getting a new router.

Is it possible to connect wireless broadband internet with a laptop through D Link hub DE 809TC

The D-Link DE 809TC is a wired hub - it does not include any support for wireless connectivity.
On the back of the device you'll find nine RJ45 Ethernet connectors. Eight of these connect to arbitrary local network devices and the hub distributes any network package directed to the local network (regardless of its origin) to all of them. The ninth connector is an uplink. It receives packages from/to other networks.
This is *all* this device can do; forward packages to all other devices on the eight internal connectors or from/to the uplink port. It has no logic to selectively forward packages to dedicated ports (that is what a switch does) or connect to DSL service providers (like a DSL router).

For your problem you would need a router with wireless LAN support, e.g. D-Link DAP 1360.

A "router" supplies an IP-address to a connected device, such as a printer, but a "hub" does not supply IP-addresses.

So, connect your printer to your router, and then access "Control Panel" and then "Printers" and then "Add Printer", and choose "add networked printer".

Reset speed from 10Mbps on 100Mbps (D-Link DE-1824i)

Tony,  I was looking at the specs and found these lines :- Choices of 12 and 24 10BASE-T ports per hub
1 100BASE-TX port (for connection to 100BASE-TX hubs) Which is saying that the user/pc ports are fixed 10Mps and there is one 100Mbps uplink port to connect two hubs together.

Cannot get the ethernet to work

The "cable unplugged" error points to an electromechanical problem. Something is broken.

The first thing to try would be to replace the ethernet cable (make sure it is wired straight through, since some hardware won't automatically configure for a crossover cable). If that doesn't work, test that the hub you are connecting to works by hooking it up at a friend's house. If the hub and cable are alright, it's possible that the jack on your network card is faulty.
