SOURCE: C 31:20 is my special message
Take the battery out and turn selection switch to camera and then turn it off. Put the battery back in and its working again.
if that doesn't work try
Try smacking the side of the camera relatively hard with the palm of your hand. Eject the tape and reinsert. You may need to do this a couple of times.

You are probably looking at around $100 repair to get the mech sub chassis, with the reel sensors replaced. Please, if you approve of my information, please be sure to rate it. Thanks!

SOURCE: doesn't play or record
I haven't seen one of these in a while so I don't remember for certain what the error actually means. I think it has to do with a cover sense switch that doesn't think the loading door is closed, but I may be wrong. A Google search turned up a lot of sites and posts that say to give the side of the camera a whack and try it again. Apparently there's some mechanical issue and the slapping technique gets it going again, at least for a while.
It's worth a shot, anyway. I'll look through my Sony stuff if I can find my files and see if I can come up with anything more. In the meantime, if this has helped at all, please take a moment to rate this solution. And thanks for asking here!

I had that problem also and I found that using smaller tapes helped. I was using the 120 minute tapes, I think they may be too heavy.
