System boot hangs at "Hard drive activation

This system refers to a sensor in the drive that is meant to alert the system of possilbe platter damage.

I would take this to a professional to see if they can recover data of the drive for you.

The drive is damaged if the system is hanging during the check and most likely cannot be recovered. All you can do is buy a new drive and take it all to a data recovery specialist.

I have a compaq presario 5600 / P4-1.5G/128MB/40GB/C48/M The other day the system hung, and nothing was working. I changed the CPU battery, cleaned the dust. the system started with Intel boot agent 4.0...

You probably need to set your boot order in BIOS (setup) to load from CD first. Reboot the computer and press either F1 or F10 repeatedly until the setup (BIOS) menu comes up, then, using your arrow keys, navigate to the boot menu and set the boot order to CD first.

If you can't get into the BIOS through F1 or F10, try other "F' keys until you get in. Also the "Del" key.

Recovering to factory settings is kind of a drastic measure just because of a system hang. You would be better served to find out why the system hung. IN FACT, understand that depending upon what is wrong, the system may hang during the recovery, leaving you with fewer options for repair.

Post back if you want to try to troubleshoot this further. It will take a while, but we should eventually be able to determine what is causing the hang.

It could be just an application that needs to be removed or re-installed. Have you installed any new software recently? What software were you using when the hang occured? What operating system are you using?

It could just be a virus or a bad memory module. Are you able to boot into SAFE MODE" (press the F8 at boot)?

If you can boot into Windows, go to "Start" > "Control Panel" > "Administrative Tools" > "Event Viewer" > "System" and check for any error entries. Also look at the "Applications" log.

Sometimes system hangs when a porgram start to load during bootup too.
for troubleshooting this, boot your system in sfae mode during startup by pressing F8.Click "start" then "Run" type "msconfig" select "startup" tab untick all the program and restart your system.

PC hangs or reboots due to overheating of the CPU.It is caused by dust and dirt contamination inside.open the system and blow it with a small air blower.

If i enable the USB drive in CMOS.after booting the system is hanged.only mother board name mercury is shown.

The problem is with the Installed USB Devices. Check whether you are using any of the USB slots in your system. If any printers or any other USB devices are installed the boot will check with these devices, so your system is getting hanged. Try to disable the USB booting or else remove the usb device and then boot. This will resolve your problem.

PC BOOTS HALF WAY

Try booting into safe mode. If it's a driver problem, safe mode will allow you to start Windows with only the bare minimum of hardware and drivers being engaged. To get to safe mode, press the F8 button on your keyboard during the Windows boot process until it takes you to a screen to let you select Normal, Safe Mode, Safe Mode with networking, etc. I would suggest not using anything other than just Safe Mode. From there, uninstall any software or new drivers that you recently installed. Alternatively, you can use the System Restore feature to rollback to a previous restore point.
