Very old is a relative term. I'm not finding anything under 780 or 6410. So we need to identify your machine. Can you post a picture?

Not picking up bobbin thread is usually one of several things. 1. Wrong needle size, blunted needle, or improperly installed needle. 2. Timing is wrong.

SOURCE: bobbin filling on Singer 626

The Singer 626 has a self-winding bobbin. You place the empty bobbin in the bobbin thingie (sorry for being so untechnical). On the left of the bobbin you will see a "lever" with a circular top on it (I think it is red-ish) Again, sorry for being so untechnical. Press the "lever" down. Thread your machine, thread the needle, wrap the excess thread from the needle around the knob that tightens the needle and holds it in place and press your foot down on the foot pedal. The bobbin will automatically wind as you hold the foot pedal down. Do not wind the thread onto the bobbin past the outer white line.

Recently had same problem. Underneath the bobbin area on the bottom of the machine is a small white plastic piece that resembles a fan. Singer calls this the bobbin cam actuator. It is usually cracked along the sleeve that fits over the metal pin, bar? This is the mechanism that lifts the bobbin when it is wound. When its broken it can't lift the bobbin to be wound properly.

I had a Golden Touch 'N Sew many years ago and as the machine aged and parts became worn, step 4 of this bobbin winding diagram started to become a problem and I had to sometimes try several times before the "tabs" would release. If they did not release, the machine "thought" it was still winding the bobbin and would not sew.

I cannnot get my Mother's old Singer Stylinst 416 sewing machince's bobbin to turn. What am I doing wrong?

Your mechanical machine could probably benefit from a professional service. Sounds like it has seized due to old oil that has dried. I've successfully used the following method to resurrect some older seized machines. In addition, the machine may have been knocked out of time when the needle broke. This can be corrected during general service or you can search for "sewing machine timing."

Wheel on right side that controls the needle up and down is very tight...

If you've threaded the bobbin per instructions... then make sure your needle isn't damaged, bent, or dull. Also make sure the needle is seated fully and correctly oriented into the needle bar.

I have a Singer Special Zig Zag Model 418. I can

More than likely you have a broken vertical shaft gear.

When you turn the handwheel you should see the sewing hook moving under the bobbin case.

If not, take it to a sewing repair person and it should cost somewhere around $100 to repair.

How old is my machine - serial no. V763688 With an attached table and cast iron treadle. ? The Product No. I have put it under is NOT correct - I do NOT know the model no. - only have the above serial no....

Hi, I suspect you wrote the serial number wrong. Here is where to look at the serial numbers and machines years.
http://singerco.com/support/serial_1letter.html
The number you wrote is too high for the machines that start with a V. Check again.
