Clean switches, check head wiring if it is a three head deck and then there could be bad relay contacts, defective electrolytic capacitors and even a malfunction in a muting circuit. That is why there are no easy answer but to get in with a scope and find out where the signal stops.

SOURCE: Motor for Akai GXC-740D Casette Deck

Hi pelagic

The motor is probably faulty. The heat is a give away for that. Many motors for older decks can still be sourced. Can you see what part numbers may be on the back plate of the motor and I can find a source for you. Awaiting your reply

SOURCE: FAULTY LEFT CHANNEL ON PLAYBACK ON PIONEER

Is it electronic or mechanical? The left channel is the physical outer edge of the tape. It's more sensitive to damage and sloppy contact with the heads. If you can see a wave in light reflected off the tape it's probably shot.

When's the last time you cleaned the heads?

SOURCE: my sony cassette deck will

Chances are there is a fault on the right channel. It could be caused by a faulty switch or a wire off on the tape head. Lastly a fault in the electronics.

SOURCE: I have a Marantz PMD510 dual cassette deck. Both

There are no fuses in this unit. The decks can't read or record because either the connection switches from the heads to the boards have failed or the power source is no longer active.
You will need to locate the switch by following the data cable coming from the heads and determine why it has failed and how it can be fixed. Then check the connections from the switch to the signal board. Finally check the power : the output of the transformer and the filtering and stabilization stages.

Akai x 360d tape deck shows recording in both channels in stereo mode on playback one channel has a weak sound

1) Clean the heads real well using denature alcohol. If this does not fix it then try spraying the record play switches with Deoxit contact cleaner. After that it could be the well known Akai garbage transistors that a Technician will need to change.

Akai cassette deck GXC-725D

It could be head dirt, bad switches, broken head wire or electronics problem. A Technician or you if you know electronics will need to get into it further to find where the problem is. There si no magic wand except some alcohol and a Q tip if the heads are dirty.

Won't record and play sounds muffled

Muffled sound is either damaged media (is it mostly the Left Channel? Multiple tapes or not?) or dirty Playback Head. Clean the heads and transport.

Please define better what "won't record" means. Tapes to be recorded need to have the little tab in the corner of the cassette shell present to allow the machine to enter record mode.

Akai gx-625 reel to reel tape deck has no sound

This could be a head fault? Another possibilty is the preamp stage. You will need to look for something that would take out both channels. Such as an IC.

My AKAI GX 636 records but can't hear anything on playback (had recorded tape play on another reel to reel) plus the VU needles don't move when you try to play a recorded or pre-recorded tape

Trace the wires from the head to the amp section. Put your finger on where they join (during playback) and see if you can get a buzz. If you can't on either channel, look for something that might be common to both channels. Either a switch, or a pre-amp IC, as being the cause of the fault.
