Vertical lines in my laptop screen (by 31 users)

posted by dennismd on Jun 09, 2007

Hello! I've been using my Compaq Presario (M2223AP) Laptop for 2 years now, then all of a sudden I saw 2 vertical lines on the screen. 1 line is a clear red line (but not so thick & dark) located about 1/3 from the left of the screen while the other is a very faint (thin, almost transparent) line located about 1/5 from the right of the screen. I think it might be a monitor problem. I'm not very good in fixing computers so I have not done anything about it yet. I'd appreciate your help very much. Thanks!

24 seven,

I just read your solution. I will try it. Forgive my ignorance but what is a VGA monitor? Thanks!

I've just had the same problem, my solution was simple, I compressed the frame of my laptop screen, just above the exact location of the vertical line while the monitor was on. I only used my thumb and middle finger and I didn't compress very hard, it worked instantly, just like magic

A VGA monitor is a monitor that uses a standard VGA connector to attach to your PC/laptop. A VGA connector is a small D shaped socket connector, about ½ inch long and ¼ inch wide. Its usually blue with three rows of holes (total of 15 holes) where pins from the mating connector match up with. The only other thing that may look like it is a serial port but that is easy to distinguish, it has two rows of pins for a total of 9.

What 24 sever is suggesting you do is connect another monitor to see if the problem shows up there as well. I?ll be surprised if it does since usually this type of display problem on a laptop more often than not is due to a defective connection inside the laptop screen area.

A quick test and perhaps even fix would be to grasp the right and left sides of your display while it is on (displaying the offensive lines) and gently twist like you were wringing out a towel. Again, and I emphasize, gently using only a couple of ounces of force. Watch to see if the lines disappear, get worse of make the screen flash or change. If you do then its likely cause is the connector from the LCD panel to the electronics has oxidation or a loose connection. If you?re lucky the flexing might even fix your problem, if not you will have to take it apart to find out exactly what is going on or take it to your local repair shop.

look for a VGA connector on back. Connect a VGA monitor. Turn both on. Ensure "external Monitor" is enabled on Compag's control screen. How is this monitor? Same problem?

have you actually tried my solution...at least effort to look for a VGA connector on back of laptop?

I got home from PC world earlier with a new laptop which had a very dark green line vertically on the left. Took it back and they told me

"its a problem with the driver software which is not covered by their guarantee"

So £800 for a nackered screan.

The solution for me was to re-seat the DVI connector on the back of the display. HTH!

Hi... I have the same problem but with my laptop, it started with one vertical line about 3/4 of the across the screen. Then a second line appeared about 1/4 way across the screen. Strange thing... the first line disappeared leaving only one. Now, a second line has appeared about a half an inch from the other line. What is going on?
Thanks for any help.

Hi. I have a Compaq Presario M2000. My problem is more or less the same as that posted by Qdoublea. First to appear were 2 thin, red dashed lines about 1/4 inch apart, located approximately in the the middle of my laptop screen. That was about 3 weks ago. Then, about a week after that, 2 thin, dashed lines about 1/4 inch apart again appeared (one blue, the other green), located at about quarter of the way from the left side of the screen. About another week after that, one thin, dashed green line appeared close to the last two lines. A day after that, one more solid red line appeared next to the last green line.

I hooked up a VGA monitor as suggested by 24 seven and the lines didn't show there. Then, I tried twisting my laptop's screen as suggested by tomj23 but nothing happened. How do I resolve this problem?

Thanks in advance.

Reylaz
